how long ago would you say comp cams lost control of their quality control/ I have a set of 979's unused in the box from 2000.
 
I tested mine in 2003 and they were very close in pressure.

979's from any year should work fine as a stock replacement.

I'd say you need to check every spring regardless of the source since you could find a problem. I've been sent 1 wrong spring out of 12 from a vendor. Back when that happened (1999) I didn't check everything. Now I do. Springs require shimming to get consistent pressure. Buy at least 16 springs and use the closest 12. If you find they are way off order another set and make a good set then return the others. It's part of the process if installing aftermarket parts.
