I see a lot of options out there. Can someone shed some light on the differences between the same turbos except the housings, in a matter of flow and efficiency?
Say a 5858 with S cover vs the same 5858 with an E cover.
The various 58mm wheels all perform well in a housing with a 5" diffuser. There would be little gain with more diffuser. The inlet size doesn't matter much. The housing could be a limitation in applications where high mass flow is required. You wouldn't want any of the common 67mm wheels with a 5" diffuser if you were looking to run them to their potential. The stock compressor housing is a variant of t04b and t3 and has a very small diffuser and performs lousy with larger compressor wheels. Even a 58mm compressor is limited in it.
H and t04s04. Notice 3" inlet on the t04s04. Don't be deceived. It's a bad ass cover and works very well with any compressor in the 62-72mm inducer size even if the wheel has a very large exducer.
Thank you very much Bison, very helpful information, and pictures. I'm sure in the near future I will be obtaining a turbo from you of your recommendation.
