<sigh>

I swear, I'm King Midas in reverse when it comes to computers...

I found out the main problem with my networking hassles was good ol' WinME...

ME also seemed to be the reason my CD burner wouldn't burn more than 1meg of data at a time, cuz it works great now!

Anyway, we saved my data on my kid's computer, did a complete reformat, and installed Win2000pro/SP4.

Everything is perfect...almost

Got one glitch that's driving me nuts:
I keep getting an error message that:
svchost.exe has generated errors and will be closed by Windows...

Once this happens, the mouse won't drag anything, and roughly half of everything I click results in zilch (like, I can't start some programs, or I can't disconnect from the internet, etc.)...icons change normally, just nothing happens!

This happens real regular, with no apparent reason (sometimes I'm just sitting there reading when it crashes) and I have to reboot to get the computer back to normal...

<sigh>-any ideas??
thanks guys, as usual! (I'm gonna have to send you guys some freebies for all the help!)
:D

Thanks (as usual) guys!

As for the microsoft registry fix--it's designed to fix a problem caused by a Novell file (Gwtps1.dll) crashing with the registry networking keys...only problem is, I don't have that dll file on my computer, so that's not the cause! :(

I have a firewall, just haven't installed it since we refomatted the drive, I'll have to give that a try!

Another note--for some reason I keep getting viruses? (Welchia & blaster worms) Before reformatting, I NEVER got a virus, even with my firewall NOT running! Now, it's like I'm a virus magnet just by connecting to the internet??? Norton keeps nabbing them, and sez it's fixing them, but maybe that's part of my problem?

great, as I typed the last line, I got the "scvhost" error message again!

sounds like the blaster worm, go to the microsoft page and download the patch for the blaster worm. also to get rid of windows messenger: click start, control panel, administrative tools, services, find messenger and put it in manual and turn off messenger.:D

You have a virus

Use and keep your anto virus DATs up to date and use a firewall like ZoneAlarm. It is free.

After my last post, I decided to read up on the blaster virus---

Pretty sure that's my whole problem, since it pretty much targets only win2000. And, the symtoms are right on target...

I think the dead giveaway, is that I've noticed that shortly after getting the svchost error, Norton nabs the blaster virus!

Just got done downloading about 40 megs of updates, here's hoping!

(so far so good by the way!)

Thanks guys, as usual! :)

Dude run the stinger!!! SOunds like maybe a variant of the blaster or something, blaster usually gives you a similar message and then counts down before shutting down your system. The updates are definately critical, but sweep your drive with the stinger to make sure its clean. I bet its not, good luck!

I ran the stinger, it came up clean! BUT, I'd ran the updates and Norton had just finished before I ran stinger...
