It's happened twice in the last few days. I know it's probably a bug, but I have McAfee online protection that updates everyday. A virus scan finds nothing. What should I do? Thanks :)

Probably either the blaster worm or the sasser worm, and both should be fixable if you download the latest microsoft windows update for free at microsoft.com.

hope this helps

wear out windows update

Correct there is 97% chance it is one of these viruses the other 3% could be something like a power supply. Go to windowsupdate and wear it out. I quess you are running 2K or XP? There are like 45 gazillion variants that evolved from the original blaster worm. The MS04-011 patch should cover most of them.

Use the automatic update client once you are fully patched. Check your event viewer for lsass errors (virus exploit).

Biggest problem you might have is downloading the patch before the computer shuts down again...

Fixed a guy's laptop at work, ran Norton A-V and found 116 of the Sasser virus on his computer!!!

Now I need to find the article that I had to explain how to fix it step-by-step because he wants me to fix his son's desktop now!!!

Hey FJM568-

It seems as though you fix one guy's computer, and then everybody you know seems to want your help, eh?

Yeah downloading the patch on dial-up sucks. The last time it showed up, I had to DL it from a computer at work and bring it home on a disk. I don't claim to be an expert on this stuff by any means, but when you live in the middle of nowhere you either learn how to fix your own stuff, or go without it. I currently know just enough about it to get myself in trouble thinkin I can fix it. :D I did manage to get rid of the Peper trojan by myself with just a bit of research, after putting up with it for months. I wish you the best of luck with your problem.

Once you have to reformat, you will learn to partition the HD and save everything on D:/ and yout will be able to format c:/s and reinstall everying and not lose anything.
