Huh

Before I bought a fancy boost controller I learned that the car has to be tuned for the octane you run reguardless if its 15 psi or 30 on c16 or pump. ALKY is a good idea with 93 octane.

ok, a new question to you boost controller guys. the website (dawes) says it has two. from what i gather the cheaper one doesnt have its 'seat polished' first off, does this matter much? is the hybrid that much better than the basic? and secondly, do you need some sort of high speed hose to 'inline' this part, or can you use like 5 or 7/32nds vac hose. anyone?

2 cents

go external from the header and forget about it all  i've learned my lessen, let it be yours!

Intead of making a new thread I figured I would post up her.

I'm having some pretty big spikes in my boost. My controller is a RJC and I'm running a Turbotweak street chip set for 15-16psi (Boost set at 15psi) on pump gas...no Alky. As far as I know, I'm running the stock wastegate puck but It's not stuck either direction. The turbo is a TE44 if that helps. I've also check the boost controllers vaccum lines and replaced zip ties etc. Anyways, There is times where I have a solid 15psi period and then sometimes it spikes all the way up to 20psi:eek: I can't have this at all, my car is not tuned for it and I detonate because of it. Anyone got any ideas on how to get this to stay solid all the time? I'm seriously thinking of an external waste gate but I also have a race chip and plan to crank the boost up to 20+psi when I take her to the track. Well an extrernal gate allow me to set it at 15psi but later on up the boost to 20psi? Also, does anyone have a link to a DP/Gate that is simple to install...I'm machincaly inclinded but have never done one before. I wouldn't mind something that will work witgh the stock Turbo heat shield...I just bought a chrome shield ;)

Thanks for your help and imput.

SVORay,

I'm having the same issue as you although the only difference is mine seems to be very intermittent, otherwise I have a solid 17# where it is supposed to be. In any event, it is not good and would probably spike to 25# when I go to race some ricer and that would be embarrassing at the very least. I started another thread and from some of the responses, I have gathered that some of the ball and spring type devices can be inconsistent. I'm getting rid of my RJC and trying a QBoost controller (another ball-spring mechanism) to see how it performs. I will post results.

BAll & Spring controllers IMHO are asking for trouble. To many times I have seen them stick or malfunction and cause over boosting ( costing me a engine and the possible chances of totaling the car from fluids getting under the slicks). It is a lot of money for a good external gate and electronic boost contoller but it can be a very good investment for many reasons. When you can controll boost this good the possibilities for improvment of the performance of the car are hugh. I know it is hard to go spend $600.00 to $800.00 on a boost controller and then buy a good gate on top of it but in the end you will be glad you did. Even lower performance setups I think it is worth the extra cost. But that may just be me and others may not be able to justify this much expeince for such a simple thing as controlling boost. But I wouldnt do it any other way unless I was just stright lining the hoses and running off the set pressure of the gate with no controller.

But like I said, at the cost of a complete engine and having to recover from going sideways with the tires slick from fluids at a 120mph I have learned the importance of things like this.

Now will a 14-15psi spring work like this without a controller? Just thinking of doing this until I can do better...besides all I'm going to run is 15psi until next spring.

Also, anyone got some info on a DP w/gate? I'm trying to see what I need to see how bolt on it is using a stock turbo etc. I tried looking it up on Cotton's site but couldn't find anything.

Yes, it will, but more than likey your wategate puck is opening prematurely. One of the ball and spring controllers would be worth the price to you if you just set it one PSI over your wastegate. That way you'd still have low boost, and get the quicker spool without your fear of spiking.

That sounds good but I'm kinda afraid of these controllers ATM. I'm current;y using a RJC and that is what I'm getting my spikes with:frown: I guess I should look into a better controller once I go external gate

External Gate

it wont cost no 600-800 bucks for an external set up:eek: you can get a cheap hks external gate for a hundred bucks on ebay, or 190 will get you a tial I think. A boost controller you can make for about 25 bucks, and get your header modded for an external gate for like 50 bucks!!! no more bs ball and spring, adjustable rod etc. As far as boosting only 15psi, yes you can. As a matter of fact, I can practically turn my boost off if I wanted too. Go external and dont look back....
