The first thing i want to know is, the TT chip is set by what gear your in, will changing the trans make this tunnig not work? Will there be another way to tune the car.

talk with Eric, he can reprogram the chip I believe that is what he did when I converted my car to a th350. You will not be disappointed if you get rid of the 200r4.

you have to get a new gear for the speedo sending unit in the tail shaft

Curious why you're changing transmissions?

BTW, I've heard nothing but horrible things about West Coast/Edge Converters so that might be part of your reasoning to change.

I was curious bout that too since the 200-4r has a better 1st gear. They make 200-4r's that can handle a lot of power, or go to a 700r4. why a 3 speed?

I would venture to say money. That was the main reaon for me. Price a 10 sec 350/400...and then price a 10 sec 200/700.

bUT ITS NOT LIKE YOUR NOT GETTING ANYTHING FOR THE EXTRA MOney, Lower 1 st gear and 4 speed with a lockup, which allows you to run lower rear gears. I have 4.56's in my Monte and I can run down the highway at 70mph at 2700 rpm. Would NEVER be able to do that with a TH350. Not to mention now with the lower 1st gear, my bite off the line is way better than a TH350 with even 4.11's

If how many RPM's he is making going down the highway is his main concern then an OD tranny is the way to go.

If making power on a budget is a concern it's hard to beat a 350.

And bite at the line has WAY more variables than just the tranny. What are your et's and 60 ft times?

obviously. I was saying same car same engine set-up, a 200-4r with 4.56 gears is going to be way better off the line then a 350 with 4.11's provided optimum traction etc.

200-4r 1st gear = 2.74
TH350 1st gear = 2.52

But cruising down the highway with a
3 speed th350 28" tall tire and 4.11's = 70mph @ 3452rpm
4 speed 200 4r 28" tall tire and 4.56'S = 70mph @ 2566rpm

thats a huge difference. Forget a TH350 with 4.56's you can never drive it on the street 70mph @ 3830rpm

There's no need for a turbo buick to ever have a 4.56 gear or 4.11 gear. A car with a lot of torque doesn't need a 2.74 first gear to get it moving. A t-350 with a 3.42 gear is fine for the street. For a 10 second or faster car it's also much cheaper than the 200r alternative. We have a couple 11 second street cars locally switched to the T-350 and they could not be happier.

I don't know anybody that runs those gears in a TR. So it's good info but not really relevant to a TR, unless somebody has some type of oddball set-up.

Do the math on a 350 with 3.42's. Most people that run a 28" tire do it to hook up at the track. There again...do ya wanna run low RPM's getting there? Spend the xtra $$$$s on a 200. If a budget kick ass tranny is the goal, you can't beat a 3 spd.

I'd always rather spend the extra money and have an all around better car. About the high torque cars not needing a 4.56 gear, thats B.S. A steeper gear is always going to get you off the line easier. Do you NEED it, no. Is it better, yes. As long as you have enough RPM in your engine to make it through the quarter with those gears.

I guess the Turbo Buick world is different than Every other car.

this guy runs a 4.30 gear
1/4 mile.... speed. 1/8 mile speed 60Ft
1) 7.250* 188.000 4.610 155.000 1.090 Buick Grand National 1986 Bill Anderson

this guy runs a 4.33 gear
2)7.592*^ 181.420 4.830 141.340 1.150 Buick Grand National T-Type 1987 Mark Littrell

this guy runs a 4.33 gear
3) 7.610 179.880 4.880 142.840 1.140 Buick Grand National 1987 Jim D'Alessandro

this guy runs a 3.89 gear
4) 7.710 174.000 5.030 141.000 1.150 Buick Grand National gnx 1985 mike

Just because no one here does steeper gears doesn't mean it doesn't help. If any one of you switched from a 3.42 or what ever to a 4.56 gear, your 60ft. time would improve as well as your e.t. as long as you could get it to stick.

a 4.56 gear is easier to get going, just like on a 10 speed bike, the big gear you could get going really fast and the smaller one would be hard to get going but then you could pedal 40mph.

Same principal.

a lot would agree with that statement including me .. we have 342 gears with a 200R4 that cruises down the highway @ 2000 rpm with a LU converter .. AND has plenty of power for the strip
oh the cars your talking about above this post are race cars ..:p

ok back to the original question in the 1st post ;)

Isn't that what some people are looking to do?

so isn't it a lil silly for 8AV8 to say

You forgot to tell me what your TR runs...

It's a LOT silly for a guy that drives a MCSS to give advice on a TR...not that you are that guy or anything..

And I asked what the RPMs would be in your first example...not race stats.

So....

And all these guys are using T-400's or Lenco's and a huge tire. They need that gear....same does not apply to a 28" tire.

A turbo car makes big block torque and the turbo loves load. Try launching a turbo car at 15# of boost with 4.56's. You won't go far. A weak N/A motor may need extar gear to help launch. Your not racing a turbo car so the same principle does not apply.

How about low 7's a 30 inch radial with a glide and 3.23 gears...yea it's happening.

well Buicks are weird cars (and so aren't their owners :p ) .. can go like hell and be driven everyday as a driver  Little different performance from a Buick to a MC  driving down the highway @ 2700  dammmm
