Alright, hopefully this will be an easy question. I put a front mount intercooler on this winter(PTE) and I expected a slight increase in coolant temp, but here is the problem, My coolant temps are pretty much normal around town, 165-175, But when I get on the highway my temps climb to like 185-200. I thought it would run cooler on the highway. I just had my radiator re-cored and replaced my heater core. I also tried some water wetter. I need some help because it hasn't even started to warm up around here.
TIA

Just my 2 cents

Zak,
I'm working my way through trying to lower my coolant temps as a matter of fact, here's a few ideas to get your gears turning.
- Are the tanks on your IC blocking airflow to your radiator?
- Check the gap between your shroud and your radiator.
- Be sure your radiator has no deposits in it, if so clean em out.
- I'm not completely sold on Water Wetter yet, alot of the guys on this board are using some stuff called RMI-25 or something like that, don't know much about it either but some swear by it.
- Be sure to use distilled water from now on.
- Distilled water transfers heat better than Anti-freeze, I'd use 25% Anti-freeze max unless you live in Alaska right now.
- Do a search for cooling on this board and you'll get even more info.
Hope this helps a little, I've dropped my coolant temp by about 15 degrees just working on these few items here. - BB

There have been three times I've had those symptoms. Twice something was clogged in the coolant system. A radiator went in an old Camaro I had. I replaced it, and the new one clogged less than a year later. It was crap from the old heater core. At idle and around town, no problem. On the freeway, the temps would slowly keep climbing. The third time was a faulty hydrostatic clutch fan on a truck, but that shouldn't have anything to do with a turbo 3.8 setup.
Basically, you are either not getting enough air or coolant flow at speed if it only gets hot on the highway. It has to be one or the other.

Do you still have the rubber, or whatever, baffling between the grille and radiator support? If not, the car will run hot at speed.

Also, you might try taking the rubber strip out between the hood and firewall...

this might not have anything to do with the problem cause i dont have a front mount, but i just drove home from virgina, and my coolant temps in the past never rose past 164 when i was on the highway. all of asuden, my temps have been in the 175, 180's.the faster i would drive the higher the temp would go up. i couldent figure out why until i checked my fuel pressure. it somehow was down 10 lbs. i turned it up and i now have no problem. very strange.

I run the CAS V2 along with the CAS three pass radiator...I run 168 on a 100 deg day at 75 mph...I was running right on the thermostat until I put the tranny oil back thru the radiator cooler.

It is very important to have all the baffles in place in order that the air must pass thru the condensor, IC, tranny cooler, and radiator....

My troubles were always prolonged idling in heavy traffic with the ac on...I think I finally threw enuf money at it that I fixed that too...never got over 193 last summer.

OH, don't waste money on a four or five row core as they block as much air as they let thru. :)

Thanks for all of the replies. I am pretty sure the radiator is good since I just had it recored, but could be clogged since heater core went out after the radiator was out. I think I have the plastic piece warpspeed was talking about. Alittle piece of plastic at the bottom of the grill.
Any other ideas would be appriecated

I think warp speed was talking about the rubber like flaps on each side of the radiator that are help in place with push clips they direct the air throgh the rad instead of around it

There is felt baffling on each side of the radiator and across the bottom from the support to the bottom of the grill.

ATR sells a metal baffle kit that works even better but you have to do some trimming to make if fit on a front mount.

My temps are also weird. If i come to a stop at a light i can see temps going down for a moment then it climbs back up if its a hot day (80 and up). But on the move temps are higher.

Before i installed the pwer plate my temps were 160-175 now its 175-195. But 160-175 temps i had on cold days before power plate. So i can't say thats the cause with certainty.

The only reason i bring up the power plate issue is cause i have my EGR blocked. I wonder if that increases temperture of engine at certain loads.

Oh yeah, as someone said before take out that weather strip by the wiper blades (put it back on in winter). Also i hate that cheesy flappy Baffle that Gm put in. I am thinking about making a replacement out of sheet metal to complety box in the radiator.

Zaks car does NOT have any of the factory rubber baffling. This could be part of his problem........wonder where you can get those? Mike McCoy maybe?

He really needs to get that baffling on. It makes a world of difference when the car is moving. If you want the original rubber pieces then Mike will probably have it. He can also go to either Lowes or Home Depot and get stuff that is just as good as the factory stuff. Go to the Flooring Dept where the vinyl flooring and carpet is kept. I found some rubber padding that is used to pad carpet that works well. Its cheap and can be cut however you want. Good Luck.
