Cranking and FAST XFI

When I turn the key from off to start without waiting for the fuel pump to prime the XFI flashes the Check Engine light and the red LED on the XFI unit flashes also. It will not start when it does this. However, if I turn the key to the "on" position first for about 2 seconds then crank the engine it fires up fine. Is this a problem or does everyone's do this?
