Ok the deal with the 87 T fell through and found an 84 T in my price range anyway.....Owner emailed me and said it would crank and idle but if you mashed the peddle at all it would stall. I am also assuming this is in park and not in gear. He thinks the turbo is bad? He just put an adjustable WG on it and did it with the turbo on the car and said he left the bottom bolt out on the turbo because he could not get to it. Anybody have any ideas of what it could be? I don't want to buy the car and have to spend major $ on it because I can get it cheap enough to do a few mods to it if it is in running condition when I get it. Sorry for the long post!! Thanks guys!!

P.S.- The problem started after the wastegate install? Said it did it on the maiden voyage of the new wastegate!

The bottom bolt of the WG is pretty easy to put on...hardest part is getting it started.....

did he hook the Vac lines up correctly to the WG actuator?

Hmm.....Going WOT with a WG actuator half on the turbo......NOT A GOOD IDEA.....any idea what he had the boost set to?

Does the car do anything before it dies? Does it smoke at all?

Herb

He has never said anything about smoking and not sure what the boost was set to. He said it was a turbo bolt he could not get to. He also said it ran fine and then it seemed as if the turbo stopped working, but he said the wheel on the turbo still spins freely! I haven't a clue!

If the turbo was "bad" It would smoke like crazy.....

What is SOUNDS to me..is he put the WG actuator on wrong, and the puck isn't sealing enough to create boost....Have him put the bolt that holds to WG actuator to the turbo on, and see if its any better......

Herb...

Here is what his email says and I quote:
"The car will start but, if you go past idle it stalls. I couldn't see any damage to the turbo, but I just did a quick look down the throat. The turbo still turns freely though. The new style wastegate actuator requires re-indexing the mounting bolts. Consequently you need to remove all of the turbo case bolts, which is a pain to access. Going against my better judgement I attempted to do this with the turbo on the car which is near to impossible. I was unable to get the bottom bolt in, due to clearance. I torqued the other 5 and left the 6th out. The alignment of the case halves are critical and I think that missing bolt is the whole problem."
unquote.

Vaccum leak from the missing bolt?

"Re Indexing"....hrm..Im confused.......

What is SOUNDS to me is there might be a leak where the turbo "spout" goes into the intake....Have him start the car, and spray some carb cleaner, or Starting fluid near that little O-ring adapter, and if the idle changes..then that should be the problem.....

What kind of WG is this...STRANGE..I haven't heard of a WG that needs to be put on in this way..

That bottom bolt that he is talking about it is NEAR IMPOSSIBLE to get in with the turbo on the car.....I dunno how he even got that Mofo out!!!

With Most of the other bolts in tight It shouldn't cause a vac leak..but hey....anything is possible.....although if that adapter isn't "just so" it will leak like crazy..

Another thing for him to check out...Make sure the large Vac line is on the PCV valve..I have bumped mine off while working on my car, and it will make it run like crap...

Herb--just a bit of info from the king of blown turbo's, I can safely say that they don't necessarily smoke when they're bad! In fact, I've only had TWO smoke, and they were fresh out of the box!

Another nice thing about cars--they're FAMOUS for having some weird problem pop up the very instant you fix something ELSE--this is just to throw you completely off track! (I'm sure Murphy is behind it somehow...)

I've been a victim of the "it idles, but dies if you touch the gas" problem several times. Usually, it's a bad fuel pump or plugged filter. Most recently, my friend's Plymouth sundance had this problem. Turned out to be the "logic module" (part of the mopar ECM) was bad. Could be the MAF went bad--could be the cat converter came apart...

One thing it's probably NOT is the turbo or the wastegate! Sounds like they need some attention, but I don't think that's causing the main problem!

Well the fuel pump was gonna be the first upgrade anyway, so. He emailed me today and he said it doesn't smoke, knock, or make any noises. It idles and if you touch the peddle it stalls. He seems to think it is an air restriction somewhere?! He accepted my offer. Do you guys think it is something major? If you guys don't think so it will be on it's way to Mississippi next week!:D

Got the car here today...

and I think this may be the problem.....turned the key on, heard the fuel pump whine and also heard what sounded to be running water got out looked under car and fuel is pouring from the main line right above the muffler(stock). It has a crack or completely broken, not sure as it was getting dark. Could that be the problem. Also anyone know where to get this line? Would a local parts house have it? Thanks

You'll have to drop the tank to see.
Chances are it's just the rubber hose.
The hard lines feed into rubber at the tank. HTH

If the fuel line isn't you're problem, does the bottom bolt go all the way through the housing causing a big vacuum leak? I can't remember which ones go all the way through anymore. Might want to check the easy things like TPS.

I noticed you are in Pearl, MS. Have you ever heard of a little town called Gautier or Pascagoula?

It was a rubber fuel line.

Got that fixed and put the adj f/p reg and f/p gauge on. Would not crank pump would not pick up what little fuel it had in and I mean little as in none. Bottom bolt does not look like it goes all the way through. It did start once and ran for about 5 seconds and it sounded like something was rattling or grinding in the turbo, compressor wheel? I am gonna have to pull it to replace the bolt and will check the wheels then. Yep, I have been to Pascagoula and Gautier many times. I guy from Gautier emailed about the heads I have for sale the other day. Thanks guys. Let you know how it turns out when I get some gas in her.

Ok here's the episode for today...

Got some gas now showing 4 gallons(dig dash). So I know it has fuel. Car will spin and spin and then spin fast like it's about to crank then slow back down. Also has popped a couple of times not bad but noticeable. It also cranked and went right back dead. It's like it's not getting fuel, but yet f/p shows 41# ignition on and about 36# with ignition off. Also starts top lose pressure pretty fast. Also where should the arm on the wastegate puck be pointing toward fender or front of car? Ready to shoot it and haven't had it but 2 days, but theirs hope I know you guys can help.;) All I did was change fuel pump and hotwire it, he said it would crank and idle fine just stumbled when fuel peddle was touched, now it won't even crank?!? Thanks guys

Forgot to mention..

Opened up the throttle blade to look at the comp wheel, looked good, no oil, no damage and spun freely. If you guys suggest checking something such as tps sensor you'll have to explain how, my first turbo car:D Also the cigarette lighter does not work and checked the fuses no burned fuses so why would it quit working. With it not working I cannot use the otc 2000 to check tps adjustement or anything for that matter. Thanks guys, going to bed!
