this car is a 2 owner... my dad for about 14 years and me for the last 6 months or so. only been in 1 accident in this car before (not me driving), that just bent up a door and maybe a quarter panel, that was in michigan. but this is something else entirely. here's a diagram:

---------------------------------------
GN
-----------------| * |------X---------
......................| S|
......................|...|
......................|...|
......................|...|
......................|...|

the * is a stop sign for the vertical road. the S is the hispanic guy that hit me, and the GN is me. Notice there's no stop sign in the direction I'm travelling, so I have right of way. dude in this mercury sable jumps out in front of me without checking to his left, and I smack into the rear of his car. he is from honduras or something like that, no insurance. makes me -VERY- happy that I elected to get the uninsured motorist coverage w/ my company. they said they'd cover it tentative on getting the police report and proving the guy doesn't have insurance. anyway, here are pictures of the aftermath. one last thing was b/c of where he hit, it disconnected the battery and the car stalled, so I was steering the car muscle wise to get it to a safe resting point at the X. Because witnesses turn their head when they hear the bang of a crash, the guy looked AFTER my headlights went out, but I have the twilight sentinel option and was able to convince the cop that my lights come on automatically. took some convincing to get the guy to believe me though. the part that sucks most about it is I think there was no traffic in the lane to my left, so I may have been able to avoid the whole thing by swerving to miss the guy.

depends on what the insurance company says, but I think they are going to cover fixing it. I think the frame is still mostly straight, not sure. if it's still good then I'll get new panels and fix it up. not even sure if engine still turns over since it disconnected the battery when I hit the guy.

That sucks! Hope your alright. Man I don't know what I would do if my GN got smashed. Rebuild it you won't regret it.

yeah from what I can tell the frame seems like it may still be straight, the windshield didn't crack, driver's side door still works perfectly, roof line looks clean, etc. it did bend the sway bar into an S near the wheel, and probably also bent the control arms on the wheel that hit.

Looks a whole lot worse than it is IMO going by the pics. Mostly sheet metal and non stuctural damage. I would say, however, that the left front frame horn is tweeked down slightly(might just be the bumper mount bent) and the area where the control arm mounts to the frame might need light work but IMO any competant body shop can fix any damage to that frame very easily.

Thats what Id call an "easy fix" and isnt even close to being totalled. The ins co may see it different as what they think is a crap shoot depending on which co it is.

well if it were a perfect world we wouldnt have tons of poor imigrants riding around thinking having a car is a right not a priviledge. ticks me off the honest joe has to not onlyh get liability but also unisnsured motorist too. here in RI not having liability is against the law but i've already been into two accidents were the other patron didnt have any insurance. insurance companies love it too, they are the ones that always make out. they should make it so your car dies right on the side of the road if you dont pay your insurance, that would be nice....the streets of south providence RI would be empty.

I would buy a base model Regal and swap all the parts you can (front clip, radiator support, fender lining, fenders, suspension, etc). Then get an aftermarket fiberglass hood to shave off a few pounds :).

It looks fixable..... but that is a nasty crash. Hope you are ok bro.

If the insurance company totals it... buy back the car and do lightweight GN conversion into a sleeper car.

WTF im mexican american and proud so what theres plenty of dumb a$$ on the road white, black, asian so i feel for jastrcl but simply pointing out this guy is hispanic implies certain things

This board has absolutely NO tolerance for ANY racist remarks. ZERO.

There are a lot of people here who take SERIOUS offense to the way you are spelling things, and are not stupid enough to know what you meant by it.

"and are not stupid enough to know what you meant by it"

???

I'm offended because I guess I'm too stupid to know I'm not stupid enough to know what he meant by it:)

j/k lighten up...

They will probably total the GN. Then do what GNX7 said.
I have seen the insurance companies total cars with less damage. Remember the crash book on these cars have a low value. The GN was an option for a Regal not a seperate model, so they are listed as a Regal.

Hispanic is used quite often here in Texas even by our beloved politicians. Probably not the right time to use the word here.
I know what you guys mean. People call me white all of the time, but I am anything but white. I am a German American Indian.

As far as I am concerned, this country should be named the United States of The Offended.:D

I doubt jastrckl meant anything by it. Probably just pissed his GN is trashed. I guess none of you have ever made a comment that could have been construed as racist especially during an emotional episode. :)

I hate racist remarks especially the ones : " Hey isn't that a Monte Carlo" :D

jastrckl hope you are OK. Get your car fixed. What part of TX do you live in??

Lighten up guys ; take that anger and go smackdown some FORDs!!;)

san antonio. I was more tolerant of other cultures when I lived in michigan. I think the first thing that spoiled it for me though was memphis for 5 years (which was after michigan), there are plenty of really closed-minded people there and unfortunately some of it may have rubbed off.

As for the technical part of this thread, you can find the parts (as I have from my accident) through various sources. I got the headlights bezels from GM parts new. The fiberglass header panel can be found new from www.carpartswholesale.com as well as a new bumper and steel support until a aluminum one can be found. the McCoy's in North Carolina seem to always have a lot of stuff too.

I feel for ya brother. I got hit by an very unintelligent, unobservant, uninsured, non-English speaking, non-insurance paying, non-driver license holding, resident alien, who happened to be Mexican and I got flamed too, for calling him something, so less colorful than I really want to say. I'm not racist, stupid people piss me off.

I hate when posts get edited, I couldn't figure out what you guys were even talking about. I'm sitting here scrolling up and down and thought I'd forgotton how to read. by the way sorry about the car

Lets clarify this before its gets out of hand or misunderstood.

jastrckl wrote the word "hispanic" like this .....hiSPanIC...capitalizing the letters S , P , I , C ...(spic) a racist word use to discribe latin Americans I felt this was done on purpose. ( I dont see it as a typo mistake)

Being called a hispanic would not bother me , calling me or using the word around me "spic" would.

I have been hit in the rear in 2 Turbo Regals. Neither of them looked as bad as yours. The insurance company in both cases wanted to total the cars. In the first case, I ended up letting them. In the second I insisted that I would fix it, and they ended up giving me the total value minus $500 for giving me the hulk back. Worked out pretty well for me.

BTW, I just happened to check the Edmund.com value for an excellent condition, 130k mile 87 GN tonight. About $5500 is what they say a RETAIL DEALER would sell it for! What a joke. I'll buy all I can find at that price. That's why insurance companies look like they try to hose you on values. It's not their fault that their data sources are seriously screwed up. But it makes it a lot of work to get a fair settlement out of them.

When my friend had his GN totalled a few years ago, he sent ads and pointed the insurance company to Buick Turbo Regal sites and the insurance company paid him $13000 for his car he paid $11500 for a few months earlier. Of course all the ads he sent had $15000+ cars in it:)
