driving into work today. Had it towed to a shop and discovered the timing belt is shot. It a 96 Monte Carlo Z34. Anyone familiar with these cars know they are a pain to work on. You open the hood and it looks like concrete.

anyway the shop told me its around $400 to replace. But there is a possibility of valve damage due to the spent belt. Anyone have any advice on this ? I can see where there could be a problem.

i really dont want to sink the $$$ into it to find out I have other major problems...

Interesting...I'm not to sure that those have interference motors or not (That being it has enough lift to make the valves hit the pistons)...I was under the impression that GM doesn't build motors like that, just so that if the belt does break the valves don't hit the pistons...I'm sure their is some literature on it somewhere, but I have no idea where to begin...I'd fix it...If they did hit then it probably just bent the valves, (hopefully)

Depending on the condition of the rest of the car, I'd probably fix it. Even if you do end up having more problems, used cars really are NOT cheap even ones with a million miles on them.

Not to thread jack this post, but are GN motors "interference" motors?

That's interesting...I didn't know that...Guess I'll change my timing chain soon.
