Not looking to go much faster. My goal with the bigger turbo was to be able to turn down the boost and maintain the CFM's when I turn up the boost on my 48.

Did I say that correctly?

You need to select a turbo whos peak efficiency "area" is in the desired operating range of the car/engine. My 61 seems SLOWER under 20psi, but at 26psi HOOBOYYYYYYY...... I think it has to do with the fact its not really moving air under 20psi. I mean, it IS, but its not doing what it was designed for.

IMHO, on a stock headed/cammed car on the STREET with occasional strip blasts to 25psi, I think a 44/49 is your best bet. If you're gonna leave 116 in it and run 25+ psi, go to a 61/62/52/53. UNless you have heads I think you wont be happy with the 63/45 turbo's as they will require too much stall, and be too far outside their op range and the car just wont feel right.

BUt I'm not Harry OR John.... so I'm not the best person to comment I guess. Maybe I should just shut the hell up...

Jim,

Ok that's what I was trying to say. Thanks! I'm all for finding a turbo that is efficent and can utilze my 9/11 3k stall that's where my 51 was going to pick up the slack, or so I thought.

Recently there have been some posts concerning the reliablity with the PT-51 turbo which makes me a little "gun shy" so to speak about dropping a couple hundred on this thing just to have it break shortly after. I'm going thru this problem with my tranny... I don't need another occurrence like this with a new turbo.

I don't mind spending the money to get quality, it just seem that it's getting harder to find.

So, back to my origional question then. Is the 51 worth rebuilding into something and if so, by who? Don't all the parts basically come from the same place? Sorry if that's a dumb question. I assumed that you get a wheel here and wheel there and with a specific trim, balance it and call it good. So, if all the parts come from the same place is any one builder better then the other?

I have had a turbo rebuilt by Limited Engineering in the past and my experince with them was good! Customer service I felt was excellent, which is what I care about the most. I don't want to be "another sale" I want to be the "customer".

Thanks for taking the time to reply.

well said...he just described my car with a te-44 turbo...you can run mid 11's with this turbo on a stock motor...but it is great for street use too
