I'd like to thank Precision Turbo for helping get through my little turbo crisis so smoothly. The turbo looks great, all cleaned up, arrived in a very timely fashion and I was very pleased.I went ahead and dropped $150 for a new exhaust housing and had them upgrade the turbo from the TA-51 to a TA-53. The went ahead and sent me back my used, oil filled old exhaust housing.

I guess the problem on the last turbo was a chipped exhaust blade. The wheel got offbalance and caused the seal to start leaking. They said it probably has been this way for a while, I just didn't realize it because the leak started small. But, they covered it under warrenty because they said it was a error on the side of the manufaturer.I'm just glad everythings solved now:D

Thanks guys!:)

actually, because of a lot of other things going on right now, I haven't had a chance to put it on yet, only had it back a couple days.

I have a pretty beefy stall on my converter, so it should spool fine, the only thing I'll have to pay attention to is the fact that is more turbo than those injectors can handle if I was to turn it up

The 009's are plenty of injector for your combo. I run 009's on cars with Ta/Te61's (PTE equal to a -54) that run 11.0's with no motor work. Most of them run double-pumpers though.

I was told the 009's are only good to about 450-500hp and that turbo will support up to 610hp.... so as long as I watch my knock and O2's, I'll be fine up to 500 or so horsepower

sounds like things are improving around there..

good to see you got a strait story and didnt have to go thru the list of excuses..

thumbs up to PTE for handling the situation in a proper manner ;)

Bruce,
I went from a 51 to a 53 and saw very little if any difference in drivablity. I do have a 9/11 converter in the car though (3-3.2k).

I now have a 64 on there........it's a little slow to spool but not to bad either.

Anyone with the answer or opinion please feel free to chime in!

I have a PT-51 that I haven't put on yet. Did anyone upgrade from a 44/48/49 turbo to the PT-51? If so, How would you summerize the upgrade?

Was there a noticable improvement?

Thanks in advance...

Speaking of dead turbos, A local DFW guy (Jeff Turner) fragged a turbine wheel in a TE52 last week, so it appears, TE52 owners, you are not safe, either (Same Wheel casting as TE51's). His car was running high 11's@117 or so.

As for upgrading a TE44 or TA49 to a 51... that isn't worth the effort and it appears you could be shortening the useful life of your turbo by doing so.

I upgraded too

a lil more lag and even if it wont for the problems I wouldnt do it again ...just not enough change

Thanks for the replies!!!

What would be the next turbo that would benifit my combo then.

As you can see in my sig. I have 40# injectors and a 9/11 3K stall.

Should I have the PT-51 converted to a 63? I asked Chopper at Limeted Engineering and this was as far as I could upgrade my PT-51 too.

Thanks

I think you can only go as n=big as a TE62. A 63 is a big-shaft turbo and I don't think you can do that. Maybe ask PTE to upgrade the 51 to a 53. I think that would be the cheapest upgrade.

I was thinking same thing..

63 is first of the big shaft turbo's

the 53 and 54 turbo's seem to perform pretty well and original cost is the same so if your's is new still there shouldn't be a problem with exchange

The 51 that I have was given to me. It had 3k miles on it when the oil seal started leaking BAD on the exhaust side. I was thinking of having it rebuilt, hence the call to Limited Engineering.

After reading several posts about the 51 and it's performance I started thinking that maybe this was not going to make a big difference.

Now, do I have the 51 upgraded or just buy a new one? The 51 already needs an oil seal and after the cost of the new wheels and shipping there and back, I might as well just buy new.

sounds like time for a call to PTE and discuss your options.

a oil seal leaking.... I think you'll find other problems then just a seal

Thanks for all the replies!!!!!

Seriously!

So, It's starting to sound like the 50 series is NOT the thing to do. Is it worth having it upgraded to a 62? Or for that matter upgrading it all to anything.

One thing id for sure, and that is I've out grown the TA-48. I must go bigger.

Frank

actually 53-54 or 60

Id say 53 or 54 would be a nice step up from the 49 but since I havent ran neither of them cant say for sure

Frank--How fast do you want to go? There is a lot more in the TA-48/49 that you have. I have run 11.9x @ 117 mph with 93 + alcohol with a lousy 60' of 1.89.
