Any idea as to why my dip stick tube keeps coming out? I took it to the track the other night and since then the dipstick tube wants to keep popping out. Went for a long drive (80 miles or so) and noticed it was acting funny, not wanting to shift right. Fluid was low and noticed a leak underneath. Added fluid and nursed it back home. Yes it is attached via the bolt at the top. The rubber grommet on the bottom of the tube looks intact. I have pushed it back down in the tranny twice now. I haven't taken it out, but it wasn't bent before. Any ideas?

Ck the vent tube

Either the vent tube is plugged or the passage in the pump for vent is plugged.
If this is a new rebuild, MAKE SURE the pump halves are correctly matched. That would cause it too.
But usually it is the vent tube plugged, pinched or otherwise blocked.
Good luck

Tubing was kinked. The tubing just hangs there, I wonder it got all twisted on itself like that??

Think I may have done some damage. Car doesn't shift right now. Doesn't want to shift into the next gear at anything other than light throttle. Doesn't want to go into OD at all, unless you floor it and let off at abour 65-70. Sounds like weak pressure to me but I don't know much about trannys.

I lost alot of fluid. When I checked the dipstick, it was well below the half way point in the crosshatch area. Fluid doesn't smell burnt though. Car ran fine while it was pouring the fluid out all over the bottom of my car. I got the dipstick tube back in, topped it back off but it is still doing it. I have an external trans cooler as well. Car is OK to drive if I baby it, but I just got it running right and that is no fun.

Trans was rebuilt in the fall of 2005 using the TCI "Pro" kit by a local trans shop. Hardened stator support and higher stall TC. At the time I had just gotten the car and didn't know anyone specialized in the 200R4s.

What was leaking John? You may have tossed the governor spring causing the late shifts at minimum throttle angle. I doubt you did any damage if you only were down as much as you stated. If it is the governor spring then i would consider threading the governor weight and inserting a nylon machine (#6-32x1)screw in through the center of the spring. You will need to cut off some of the threads because 1" is too long The hole in the weight is the correct size for the tap. Use service removable loc-tite on the threads.

Well as much problems as this car has given me, I basically said F**k it and took it to the track tonight, and decided if my trans was toast then I was gonna put it out of it's misery. I went there fully prepared to get it towed home and buy a new one from Lonnie Dyers whenever I get the money together. Tossed in the race gas, cranked up the boost to 25psi and ripped off a best of 7.31. 1/8 mile track Ran pretty consistent 7.42, 7.36, 7.31 and a 7.38 all at about 95-97 mph. Trans shifted fine as I left it in D the entire night, not a single flair on any shift? Just acts like doo-doo at light throttle and hesitating to go into overdrive. Gonna pull the pan and check it out sunday. Any ideas?

I am in the market for a new trans

Dropped the pan. Lots and lots of metal. I don't mean metal shavings, I mean big slivers of metal that look like they belong on a gear or something about a half inch in size.

Could be a converter problem also since you stated it shifted ok at the strip.

Brian,

The metal that is in the pan looked like it came off one of the thin metal cogs/gears that was in the package from TCI. I buttoned it back up last night and put fluid back in it just so I can move it in and out of the garage as needed. Sounds like it is packed full of gravel now:rolleyes: fluid didn't smell burnt though. Under WOT it does shift fine.

Maybe an assembly problem like incorrectly installed thrust bearings or excessive thrust causing parts to bang into each other.
