Is it possible to remove without pulling the tranny?

I loosened the bolt at the top of the bell-housing that holds the bracket on the dipstick, but the bottom doesn't want to come out of the seal in the tranny. I also seem to be real tight on maneuvering room.

The reason I ask is that when my tranny was rebuilt, they installed the dipstick on the wrong side of the engine wiring harness, and now it seems to be pinching it.

Thanks.

I don't think it's possible to pull the dipstick out with the trans in place. I've tried to install it with the trans in place (having forgotten to do it before I put the trans in) and couldn't do it. You might be better off unbolting the harness in its various mounting places to see if you can stretch it up over the tube.

We've had mine out before, wasn't too big a deal. I believe theres a bolt holding it into the tranny case though. I ripped the o ring on mine, so I had to remove it and replace the seal, it was pretty easy.

And you did this while the tranny was in the car?

It's a MOFO, but can be done. The hardest part is getting the NEW seal in without destroying it. Remove bell-housing bolt, then wiggle - wiggle - pull - wiggle - and pull some more and it'll finally come out. It helps to have a long piece of 3/8" barstock (and a hammer) to help "persuade" the tube back into place from above while a helper guides it from below.

Thanks for the help, I was able to remove and re-install it (in it's proper position) last night, and it is not necessary to remove the tranny :)

The rubber seal at the bottom was fairly new, and getting the dipstick out was the hardest part, I had to drive it out with a hammer and screwdriver.

Once it's free, it's pretty easy to twist the tube around and get it out (no harder than a downpipe).
