Do I Need a Bigger Downpipe?

Has anyone had noticeable power or E.T. gain after going from a 2.5 inch to a 3" downpipe. I'm runnin a t63e and it seems like the car wont pull as hard as I would like it to in 3rd gear. So I'm thinking it might be choking on the small downpipe and the rest of the hooker exhaust. Any comments would be cool. thanx.

Absolutely you will gain from this. ONLY if you eliminate the crappy factory elbow at the turbo, that is the biggest restriction in the exhaust. You also will have increased boost and a possible spike and creep due to the great flow, so make sure you de-tune a little before you make WOT blasts. Hope I answered and question you had.

There are some "frugal" owners who have ported the stock elbow, and had good results. They are running some pretty impressive times, especially when you consider how much money they have resisted spending. But veryfew, if any, have run "back to back" with the ported stock elbow and a TH type downpipe, so it's hard to get true comparison.
If those "frugal" owners had bought and installed every high buck improvement, they might be running in the 7s- if you believe the claims of those vendors.

I think that with a TE63 turbo, you would gain a noticable difference. Also increased spoolup. Going from the stocker to the 3" THDP was one of the most noticable differences a mod ever did to my car.

I ahve one to sell. Dont know the make of it ut it does have a delta gate on it and is 3" steel and could use a good cleaning and some high temp paint. 100 bucks plus shipping. I have some pics.

I went from a 3" to a 3.5" on my little TA49 and noticed a tad better spool up. Then installed the Z06 maf and 4" cone and it got a tad better again.

Personally, I would just get a smokin deal on a 3.5" and be done with it, bigger is better on this issue.

when i got my TH DP 3 inch, i had stock turbo and headers...I noticed WAYY faster spool, NO More boost leak, and smoother shifts too!

I'm glad I read this thread. I'm running a stock downpipe and elbow on the combo below, but I have a 3" THDP headed my way in the mail right now. I can't wait untill it gets here.

anyone know where i can get a good deal on a 3'' or even a 3.5'' downpipe for stock headers? I would also like to get a test pipe with a cutout so i can get rid of the cat.

i have 87 g.n had poston pipe and ported elbow and recently replaced w/terry houston, big gain definate noticable gains ,spool much faster and have better boost control ,jays g.n has real good deal on them and has them in stock took 2 days and it was here, also came w dump .i think with shipping was $451.00 best 450 i ever spent .i run open dump and man does she sound mean .i actually could feel difference after install .i cut out cat and had to remove 4 bolt flange and weld to my existing pipe. took total of 1 hr to install well i run a ford garage so i had lifts and all air tools but was still easy .ck out jays g.n great guys very nice to deal with.good luck
