Have a 87 Regal limited 3.8 carb. auto. donor car, what is the best way to see if it has the big rear end, good trans etc...........?
Have been told these parts are thrown around between models especially in the last year for the G-Body?

Any thoughts........?

Mark drive shaft complete one full rotation, count the number of times tire rotates (3 and one half rotation = 3.5 gears)

Not looking for the ratio but the real diff. between the base and biggest offered rear end!! (7.5 vs 8.5) is there a telling I.D. process??

Same goes for trans. ??

w/o a tag on either the diff or trans it's hard to know......at the very least you could pop off the diff cover and measure the ring gear as for the trans not sure exactly how to ID

Wrong! Mark the tire, roll the car by hand, count the number of times the driveshaft turns to complete one full turn of the tire!
That is to find the ratio, to find rearend size look for codes stamped on housing and then look them up.
o_O

Here is a trans id chart. But what valve body is a whole other issue.

I know it's a 200 R, just wondered if there was a solid way to see if this car may have gotten a GN trans thrown in as the factory was using up the inventory??? ( Pan is stamped Metric 200) Any better way to tell???

Should be a tag on the passenger side of the trans

It has turbo heads on it for sure. check the block casting as well. Might be a 109 block would have to be drilled for oil return. the rear end is a 7 1/2. The trans is a 200c or what ever they call it. cant handle any power What color is the interior.
