Ok guys I need to find out if the little dots on the oil pump gears are relevant to how I reinstall them back into the oil pump. Do they need to be lined up in any particular direction or does it matter.

Thanks in Advance

Hi,
Yeah, they sure look like alignment marks, don't they? I really am not sure what their purpose is, but as it all whirls around, they get out of whack anyway, at least I think so. I personally don't think it matters.Anybody else out there with a little insight?

Makes no difference. Being set to .002 makes a difference! Also, look at the surface they ride on & if scored then smooth it out on some 220-400 grit taped to a peice of glass. there is an article on it I will post if needed?

Wonder if they were put there to help assembly line builders index the oil pump shaft with the cam sensor gear and slot pin? Making the first time start up a guaranteed vroom.
Just a thought.

Hi,
Maybe. Have you checked to see if your theory is correct? As I have a motor under assembly now, I will try to remember to check that. What about the mark on the countergear?

Personally the Cam sensor is one of the last items to install,

I want my Drill to work it's nuts off and give me some oil pressure before I consider starting it.

the oil has a bit of a tough time getting to the pump so definatly use a drill and prime it.... I bet it spins for a good 3-4 seconds before you get oil. not good for a fresh engine....

I guess my point is don't worry where the marks are, there are more important things....

i always figured the marks just meant that both gears marks should be facing down..... because the gears both have a chamfered edge on the outside of the gear. Not sure if both sides(top or bottom) do or not. I don't line them up, just make sure the mark is showing when i assemble.

Maybe the marks are there so you line them back up properly. They probably wear into each other like lifters and cams do. If you line the marks up, the same teeth will always engage with the same surfaces with each revolution. Make sense to anyone else????

I intall mine SIDEWAYS just to be different! There is nothing to the "dots". Install the gears without regard to dot placement. They have Nothing to do with timing or anything else. You CAN'T get them lined up anyway, as they are on the tooth of each gear. So, do you put them to the right or the left of the other gear? I understand the confusion, though.
