I know its a sorry question but when you mess up as much stuff as I do its better to be safe than sorry......
The donut has two sides the thin round "band" side and the wider flange side. Which side goes into the elbow? I put the thin band side into the elbow and the fatter round side down but now something does not look quite right. All help appreciated. Thanks
Gary

Gary,

The rounded side should go up, the thin band/steel side should go down.

uhh, are you sure about that?! My downpipe is off, and I can see that the thin metal band side nests neatly into the stock elbow.

ie, gasket rounded side down (into the down pipe).

Gary, what doesn't "look right" to you? There will be a gap between the stock downpipe and elbow, they will not touch...

Think of the donut gasket & downpipe as forming a "ball & socket" joint, like a human hip ... the downpipe has to be free to move slightly, since engine moves around when accelerating.

the thin band side goes into the elbow where it fits. i debated over this when i put on my TA49 and putting the thin band in the elbow made sense and felt right like it belonged there. also, when i disconnected the downpipe thats how it was and the downpipe had never been off previously to my knowledge as the car was 100% stock and not cared for in the best way possible.

Doh!

You guys are right! Gary, don't listen to me I screwed up. The downpipe has a tapered flange, and thats what seats against the rounded edge. I had it totally upside down. Its been too long since I dealt with a stock downpipe.

Then again...if you got that Houston pipe, you wouldn't even need a doughnut! (Couldn't resist)

Thanks ALL, I appreciate the help!
Tom H- I just thought the spring on the bolts looked to compressed. Thanks again.
