Downshifting the 2004R manually

Can you downshift a 2004R manually? Or is it best to let the trans do it? (I'm just thinking the worst case scenario where ya might need the lower gears to help you stop quick just in case there is trouble ahead)

for emergency purposes you can manually downshift to slow the car down but in slippery road conditions w/positraction you can cause the vehicle to go out of control . also if you have deleted or modified the rev limiting system in the stock computer you can over rev the engine causing internal damage .

You shouldnt have to downshift your trans to slow down if there is "trouble ahead". Whats wrong with your brakes?

It's a 63 C10 Stepside with drum brakes, enough said.

No big deal, though.

In the winter sometimes stepping on the brakes is worse than a downshift.

You should be able to tell after a few years of winter driving at what speed you will get controlled slowdown as opposed to swapping ends.

Same with the brakes but occasionally you have to do both.

Winter driving is a skill everyone should learn in a TR.

How bout a downshift and the rev going from 1000 to 2500. Is that within the limits?

It shouldn't hurt, but that said a stock 2004r shouldn't break the input shaft either, it's one of those things you just never know.

The proper way to slow quickly is to put transmission in neutral and use brakes.Find a deserted road and mark a spot and try it you might be surprised.

oh i know this VERY well...

one day i was driving on a backroad which is a long open stretch of road...i was doing around 90 mph and it was winter...the road was black and i was young and stupid and didn't know what black ice was...i was in a 95 mercury cougar V8 with posi traction...i accidently pressed the D/OD button on the shifter while doing 90 and the car downshifted to D and i lost complete control of the rear end of the car...fishtailed then started doing 10 - 360's until i crashed into a large snow bank just over a bridge...no damage to the car and i am lucky to be alive today
