Dumb "Homemade Adj. Wastegate Actuator" question

I've read the directions on the site http://www.gnttype.org/techarea/images/Adj_wastegate.JPG , but I am freakin horrible with asking for parts at the parts store. I see that I'm supposed to thread both ends of the arms with a 1/4" -20 die, but what size pipe coupler do I ask for at the parts store, and does the pipe coupler attach to the 1/4" nuts? How do I "rejoin" them? Are they welded together or something? Is the pipe coupler already threaded on the inside? I know these are really lame questions, but I don't know jack about this kind of stuff.

I think "nut coupler" is the more correct term. It is a nut that is 1" long, threaded all the way through, and hex shaped on the outside. You want a "1/4-20 nut coupler", plus a couple of 1/4-20 nuts to use as jam nuts on each side of the coupler.

Okay, www.mcmaster.com has coupling nuts, 18-8 stainless steel, for $1.08 each (put 90268A029 in the search box and then click "catalog page"). There's a bunch of names for them but pipe coupler has always seemed wrong to me - I would worry about getting 1/4 NPT thread or some such.

Is this what is specified in the directions? That is the size that wil fit over the threaded 1/4"-20 ends? Thanks for the help guys! I don't know how comfortable I will be asking the dude at autozone for a "nut coupler," but I think I'll get over it.

Lowes should have them in their Hardware section. Any "Hardware" store will have them, too.

I printed the directions from gnttype.org and took the with me to ACE hardware. I showed one of the guys that works there the directions and he gave me all of the nuts/couplers that I needed.

FYI, "coupling nut" is the correct term. A pipe coupling typically has tapered threads (NPT). What we use on our wastegates is definitely straight 1/4-20 threads. 1/4" pipe cpuopling will get you nothing but trouble.
