I'm installing a Tial Blowoff valve. I've seen alot of regal turbo's go bad cause of the thurst bearing getting worn from
let of the throttle and all that pressure
pushes against the blades to go the other way and put alot a fatigue on the bearings. U get forget that these turbo's spin 100,000-
150,000rpm and what do u think it does to the bearings going the other way? I'm going to try it out and see if it prevents thrust bearing wear.
I hate pulling the turbo off and getting it rebuilt and pay $450 or more. I'll try
spending $240 once and see if it works :D
 
ok, I give up...spend your money and have fun......"lots of turbos with thrust bearing wear"......all of 'em with prolly 100K plus, right?
 
I know if your thrust bearing goes bad and u keep driving it what happens? U start eating wheels cause of the play from the bad thrust bearing. I knew a guy that rebuilt turbo's for a living and he also admits if u put a Bov on it could pro-long the turbo Life. I spent $1100 on my Turbo and I don't want to rebuild it in a couple of years like my friends car with
8000miles on the turbo and it has a bad thrust bearing and He chages his oil ever
1500miles. My friend is pretty pissed off that the turbo didn't last longer.

I was also told it does'nt hurt to try:D
Look at my buildup a N/A 4.1 How many people are nuts enough to build one of these motors:D
 
4.1 is a hell of an engine if you build it right and it looks like you got all the right stuff......will certainly be as tuff as a 3.8 and you won't have to run it as hard

lots of things tear up turbos, but backpressure is way down the list if the turbo is built right.....mostly stuff from headgaskets, etc

Just a note to BlackBeauty and AzGn, on a road racing track having precise throttle control is *very* important, stick or manual. An (experienced) racer will balance the car right on the edge, and throttle control is just as important as steering at this point. Having a blow off valve helps with this in a huge way.

You won't be shifting a manual car in a (grip limited) corner anyway, you would short-shift before the corner. As you tiptoe through the corner right on the knife-edge, you'll need that throttle response in any (stick or auto) car, as you'll be backing in and out of the throttle to control it. If you're not on a track like this, and you don't care about cut-n-thrust performance, I don't see any reason to run a blow off valve. It won't help worth a dang in an automatic car on the quarter mile.

As far as thrust bearing wear is concerned, I thought this was really only an issue on (race) cars running high boost, i.e. 35PSI and up. I've never really seen a turbo fail like that, but I'm only around cars running less than 30PSI ;-)

The Porsche (bosch) valve is a pretty small unit, I think with a 1" inlet/outlet. I don't know what the differential crack pressure is. But it's probably a solid thing to try instead of springing for a $$$ aftermarket valve, especially one designed for a speed density system (all the ones that blow off to atmosphere) instead of a MAF setup. $20 and some hose would be a steal.

I have a Turboknetics BOV on my IC up pipe outlet. It works fine. It keeps my TE-60 from sneezing now.

Woody is probably right, but I don't like Turbo sneeze nonetheless. :D

Just one of those deals where there is no overwhelming data either way.
