The board has not changed much lately so i am going to ask everyone a question. If you own a business has it fell off to where it is getting scary or if you work for a company have they slowed or even layed off? Just wondering what everybody else is having to do to deal with this. Thanks

I work for a Tier 1 Automotive supplier, which does business with all the major OEMs, foreign and domestic. Needless to say, business is anything but normal. Fortunately, we have only gone through two layoffs in the last three years, removing about 10% of the workforce each time. We have been in the red for the last couple of years, however, this last quarter has shown 40% shrink in business. I should have stayed in Aerospace...

I was laid off from my company for 1 month. Went back to work for 2 weeks now Im laid off again. I work for a company that makes commercial display cases you see in supermarkets or deli's. Not much of a demand for those right now.

There just isn't much for jobs out there. Hopefully things pick back up. Don't know when that will be though?

Been 30hrs a week since Jan 1. They also laid off a few people, but they were just the dead weight anyways (drunks).

Funny that you should mention that! I am getting laid off this Friday do to the current economic situation. The aerospace company that I work for has been hit hard worse than 9-11. A portion of the companies that we build jet engine parts for cant get loans to buy our parts and on top of that, people cannot afford to fly because of their loss of jobs so it is a vicious cycle that has affected everyone. The good news is when the economy starts going back up, I can go back to work for them but now it is a question of "when"?

I Know One Feild That Isnt Laying Off People...... The Medical Feild.... Im In School Now To Become A Nurse, 1 Year Program, You Can Go Anywhere In The Us And Get A Job.... Thats The Same With Any Medical Position.... Never To Late To Goto School

My buisiness is up 11% from last year at this time. The oilfield is keeping my area of the country insulated from the recession.

I'm in a rather unusual situation. Business is good in my industry. Granted chemical and component costs (oil) have skyrocketed since 9/11 but we've made adjustments to offset that.

The company that I work for makes personal hygiene and household cleaning products. Face it, when you go shopping, be it at the grocery or big box chains, are you going to buy the expensive leading brand or the mid-cost name brand? Hrmmm, $9 a bottle for Tide detergent or $3.99 for Arm & Hammer? $4 a tube of Colgate toothpaste or $2 a tube of Aim, etc. Because of the downturn in the economy, more people are buying the things that we make. People have to stretch their dollar today.

We haven't had to lay off because we were preparing for this for the last 4-5 years. We've been "lean and mean" and Wall Street has taken notice of our stability during these troubled times. I've seen numerous times where employees have left our company in recent years to work for a competitor to only wind up being laid off a few months later.

Back in January I laid off 1/5 of our workers. We had 100 now we have 75. I'm finding it difficult to keep all those people busy even at 30 hours per week. I've been working some of the people on a week off a week. It's tough.

Well I am in the hotel industry and it really has fallen off. I keep hoping that it turns around pretty damn quick because it is getting tougher and tougher to pay bills and pay the help. It really bothers me what our government is doing right now and hope they are going in the right direction.I feel sorry for all the people who have been laid off or have lost their buisness because off these economic times but hope[thats all we can do at this point] get better.

I work maintenance in a grey and ductile iron foundry. 32 were laid off in Janurary, and 34 just got laid off last Friday. We have been doing the work 3 weeks take 1 off for the last 4 months. We are now down to 1 shfit of prodution. Our customer base is diverse enough that we should be able to work 1 shift full time. But, who knows for sure? These are uncertain times right now.:frown:

Auto Ind. I've been working a few weeks then off one or two since late last year. Right now it's 3-1. But we've been told that we're off from mid-June to mid-July and they've added a number of two week down times into the mix thru Oct. already too. Am happy to work these days and get aggrevated when we take off and leave behind an order bank of people with the credit to buy our products these days.. '

You Know it's bad when you call a friend who says they're driving into work, and you congratulate them!!!

My job is good for now. My dad just got laid off from Textron/Cesena after 13 yrs though. So hes in a pinch

Use to be in the John Deere business for 15+ years... moved home 2 years ago to buy our long time family business and am damn glad I did:cool:

I wish you all the best!

Ty

I am in the auto glass business & its business as usual. I actually did better over the winter than I have for the last five years. I think this is due to people fixing up the old klunkers instead of buying new cars. Anyhow I am very thankful. It is always a little scary being in business for yourself, even though I have made it for seven years, you never know what may happen.

I'm an ASE Master and I've been waiting for the hammer to drop at the shop. No one has the money to fix their cars unless they have no choice. The local dealers have gotten rid of most of the techs and they have been calling looking for work. 5-6 a week. Kinda sad considering I've been doing it 27 years. Ty, I lost my biz in 2004 and moved back to TX in 2005 so I wouldn't loose my Azz.(lost it anyway) Still just hanging on though.

Just dont listen to the doom and gloom on the news.... Try and stay as postivie as you can, especially with your customers guys.

If your a gov worker or a politician Your good! Unless your a democrat in congress up for re-election :)

As for the rest of us workers i have noticed certian co workers make moves to cut others down just trying to jockey into position to make sure they are the last to get laid off.

If your a business owner & don't have a wad of money to keep you afloat it must be tough. Most companies or self employed folks have a hard time with roll back pricing to get jobs or sell items. I have seem lots of little stores go out in my area.

List of good buisness to own in bad times:
REPO MAN
Cheap Eats
Dollar Stores
Mechanic
House Cleanouts & junk removal ( hey I like that one)
Small independant car dealer with low priced cars 2k to 10k
Beer company
Bar room (for the obama welfare types to spend our stimulis)
Liquer store. (dam here in NH the state owned stores is cleaning up. Drinking is way up! i can tell by looking at police logs)
