EGR Valve bad?

This is my first post. I've been troubleshooting a problem i'm having and can't figure it out. I have an 87 GN that is all stock except for a heated o2. The car is popping and backfiring as soon as i put the car in gear. Once in a while it will backfire at idle but for the most part the idle is ok. I replaced the coil, negative bat. cable, spark plugs, plug wires. I read a post that said it could be the egr valve, and to compress the plunger at idle and the car should stall out or want to stall. I did this and the motor did not stall or want to. The rpms actually increased. Does this mean i have a bad egr valve? I don't have a scan tool yet, but was hoping I could gets some help with this issue. Thanks

You need a scan master so u can post some numbers or maybe even a MAL code? Need more info.. Double check your plugs and wires and make sure you have them right. Sounds like something may be crossed. Do you have a stock MAF sensor and Chip? Have you done a spring cleaning?
