My EGR Valve has begun spewing oil out the diaphragm. Is it just a matter of replacing the EGR or is there an underlying problem somewhere else?

I can't imagine where the EGR circuit is getting enough oil to show itself.

That's a weird one. The only way oil could be reaching the EGR diaphragm is if it's coming all the way from the vacuum block, through the hard line, past the check valve, through the rubber vacuum line, through the EGR solenoid, through another vacuum line, and into the diaphragm. I guess that's possible under boost conditions if a lot of oil is somehow getting into throttle body. I have found oil in the Hobbs switch that runs my boost lights on my digital dash, and that's a long run for it to travel. However, there should be a check valve in that line about under your fuel pressure regulator that prevents boost pressures from reaching the EGR solenoid (and everything downstream). First thing I would do is take that off and see if it passes air when you blow through it. If that check valve is defective (allows boost to pass through it and get to the EGR solenoid), then I guess I could see some oil getting to the EGR valve diaphragm. If the diaphragm is ruptured, then maybe some of that oil would spew out.

Quite a scenario, maybe a bit unlikely, but worth investigating.

Good Luck,

Ok...I pulled the EGR valve, a small amount of oil was dripping from it as I took it off. The check valve under the FPR passed the blow test, seems to be working ok and there was no oil in any of the connecting vacuum lines. I also pulled the up pipe and there was more oil in the throttle body than I have ever found in there before and there was a light trail of oil going down into the intercooler. I guess I'll be cleaning everything out this weekend but where is the problem?

One thing I did last week was install new injectors. When I was done, I started the car to check for fuel leaks a couple times though I never actually drove the car because I was still waiting for my matching chip to arrive. It ran like crap when I started it up and was blowing lots of smoke. It runs well now with the new chip but I'm wondering if starting the car without the matching chip caused the problems I am now experiencing? Other than oil coming out of the EGR the car runs good and scanmaster numbers are all within acceptable range.

If your new chip doesn't use the egr then you can put on a block off plate. Might solve your problem. Ya know, out of sight out of mind. ;)

Follow the oil path;)
Yup, been doing just that. Cleaned out the IC, up pipe and throttle body. I even found oil seeping from the little foam wastegate solenoid filter. New EGR and check valve going in later. Still hunting down the cause though...

Did you ever find the answer to this issue? Just had this same thing happen in my T today after I put in a new HVAC/cruise control checkvalve by the firewall. I took it out for a drive and did a few WOT blasts. When I got home, I could see where oil 'sprayed' out of the EGR valve. The ONLY way this could have happened is if the first checkvalve is allowing boost to come through, but mine also passed the 'blow' test.

I'm still chasing the problem. Read this in its entirety. Might be of help. http://www.turbobuicks.com/forums/b...problem-found-boost-leaking-through-stem.html

I'm going to change the check valves, regardless if it passed the blow test, and install another EGR and see what happens...

can somone give me instructions on how to remove the egr and use the block off plate????ive been following lines to where they go and what im confused about after the egr piece is where the lines go after, should i connect with a block off one of the 2 connections with a rubber nipple piece?

Thanks! I never thought about the bottom side of the EGR diaphragm being the source of the leak under boost. I felt underneath the valve bonnet and it had a lot of oil sludge on it. The only reason I noticed the oil spray this time is because I cleaned and degreased the valve covers while doing the vc gaskets. I went ahead and ordered some new checkvalves from usplastics for the EGR and vapor canister and will replace the EGR valve and gasket as well.

Let us know if it works out. It'll be a while before I have the free time to work on mine.

Replaced the EGR today. Its not 'hard' to replace but the new EGR valve did not have the protruding valve seat that holds the gasket AND valve in place. You have to make sure it stays aligned as you tighten it up or you'll have a major vac leak like I did after my first install attempt. Took it out for a drive afterward and no more erratic WOT boost or oil spray.

Thanks for the update. Glad it worked out. Which EGR did you use?

Finally got around to work on this. The old EGR appeared to be leaking/spraying oil from the EGR stem. I replaced check valves and EGR and it seems to have solved that problem. My problem with oil in the IC, uppipe, throttle body, AND turbo appears to be a separate issue and I'm hoping its just a bad turbo. Got a new one on the way.
