My girl is on a mission to make our office "paperless". We got into a discussion that just completely went south lol. I told her that we need to have a hard copy of ALL important information plus everything backed up on a drive and stored neatly in the Farady caged safe. She wants everything store digitally with no paper PERIOD (not even in the safe). I tried to explain to her the "what if" factor as it pertains to EMP attacks, solar storms, and nuclear attacks. She asked me if I was smoking pot again....I just walked out the room like . My father has a PhD in physics and when I was a kid my dad would tell me about these things. Usually it was right before bed so I would be awake for hours  scared as sh*t thinking about gamma ray bursts and killer asteroids. My dad was a madman when it came to this kind of stuff and he modded a lot of our electrical equipment. My mom thought he was nuts and my girl thinks I am crazy, hell maybe I am, but it is plausible that a catastrophic event could wipe out any unprotected electrical device sending the world as we know it into the dark ages. My ol lady and I can't really talk about things like this because it scares her. Might as well share this info with my TR friends. It's kinda nerdish but...we are all car nerds and this stuff is interesting. Anyways, since such an event would pretty much any kill any computer control vehicle, here's an article on how to protect other electrical devices.

That points distributor and mechanical fuel pump is looking pretty good right now.

silly as it sounds, i think my family and i could survivd. we know how to grow vegetables, and live stock, we hunt and fish, we have firepower to defend against thw neher do wells. water is the only concern i would have. there is a lake a couple of miles away so i would have to see, and we could catch rain water but going to the reservoir would be a neededbtrip. maybe I am delousuional.

While an emp burst could wreak havoc for sure, I don't believe it'd be as bad as what that site suggests. First off the military stuff is likely very well protected (norad is inside the rocky mountains) and I doubt that any one blast could black out most of a continent like they assume would happen. I'm sure terrorists are trying to find ways to use one on NYC or soCal but even if they succeeded it'd be localized and everyone would just truck a bunch of new computers into the area and start over. Probably wouldn't kill many if any at all. A dirty bomb that spread radiation over a city would be more their style. Never hurts to be prepared though.

"I got a shotgun, a rifle, and a four wheel drive and a country boy can survive"

Oh wait, my four wheel drive has EFI. Damn. Guess i'll find an older one.

i recall reading that a small nuclear blast a few dozen miles up would take out the power grid.. the blast itself would only affect a small portion of the grid, but the rest of the grid would go down as a result of the remaining hubs trying to compensate for the lost hubs..
or something like that.
that's essentially what happened when most of New England went dark a few years back- one small substation got screwed up, and the stations around it failed one after another when they tried to spread the load out.

My kind of thread:biggrin:

Heck yeah you need a hard copy of EVERYTHING if possible! I got paid bills from when I was 18:tongue:

Your Dad sounds like a very smart man! You are in LA right? Def need something to protect from an EMP blast...

I have been meaning to make up some cages for a couple of years and have been to lazy. I want to get one big enough to keep a computer, for playing dvd's and stuff since the web will be gone:( Also need to keep an ignition system for a couple of old vehicles and some buick goodies too! If they hit my KAM system I would be pissed;)

I don't think many people realize just how many people would die from an EMP attack. Think of all the people that need electrical gadgets for health purposes...

We are so wide open for an attack it isn't funny. LA, DC, NY, and other major population centers are probably attack locations...

I got un-paid bills from when I was 18

Dont worry about the KAM, its propping the door open, its really working good :biggrin:

I think some common sense would indicate that people should have some important stuff backed up.
My poor friend got all freaked out over this kind of stuff and focused way too much on it.
He ended up buying a truck with a mechanical ignition and fuel pump.
I labeled it the End Times Truck and he stopped talking to me about these matters...

Thats hilarious. Here's what I think about all the time...these thoughts usually have triggers such as reading Revelation, watching that show on the History Channel about after humans are gone, or issues like the one with my GF. Acts of terrorism with EMP weapons don't really bother me because it will be centralized. The thing that worries me are natural disasters in which we have NO CONTROL.

What do you mean by "centralized."

The history channel, nat geo, discovery channel and so on are all just propaganda:biggrin: Way to much disinfo...

funny assumption

the thought of having a vehicle that has mechanical points and such thrives on the assumption that some how one will be able to aquire gasoline to run it on. I guess one might be able to distill some corn squeezins, but i really think if it came down the kaos would interupt distribution of most if not all groceries, fuel, and retail with out cards on a cash system that was supported by walking or horse drawn transportation would not be very viable.

bringing thread back from page 3....I am reminded of the NE blackouts a few years ago...that was already bad enough, and it was NOT an EMP; officially.....but something Popular Science or Mechanic did say in an article AFTER it happened that its possible to have a NEMP (Nonnuclear EMP) and that it could well be very dangerous; EMP does nto just affect electronics, it also affects magnetic fields; in short; we might see magnetized mountains of iron ore; we might reverse polarity, we might see birds and mammals among other things confused and dying off; we might also expect to have anything that produce electricity to be either fried or reversed polarity.....and so on. the Earth has had an history of switching polarity or tilting axises...theoretically, this is all hypothetically though; I believe it to be an issue; a sort of Electronic Warfare tactic that could affect lots of things.....but it would take a very sophiscated enemy to pull all this off if one were to coordinate such a massive infrastructure attack without using explosives....

The only things I have protected are some radio equipment for essential communication. I can lose everything else electronic without tears. I figure that power equipment usage will necessarily be rationed due to the fuel production availability based on seasons and how my crops do vs. sustainability requirements. We'll be fine w/o the electric even tho we can produce our own, given that recurring magnetic flux doesn't occur too many times to wear through the parts supply of buildable generation. Natural disaster's are my big worry. Most ALL of us are in the path of Yellowstone! Or would be directly affected by it. If we end up in a naturally occurring nuclear winter scenario, we're all only good for the time it takes the killer dust to shred our lungs, or run out of stored supplies. I have no intent to flee. Becoming a part of the hoard would really wreck any survival plans!:frown:

Tinfoil hat on for real now,
Drought and deluge are big concerns as well. I noticed that the skies were full of chemtrail's here when the east coast was gettin hammered with rain. They quit entirely after the gulf explosion. I'd been too busy to check the news for several days into the previous week ago when I noticed the sky was full of trails again and asked a bud who informed that, yes, the gulf spill had been capped and they were up to their old tricks. Only took 3-days to create rain!:mad::rolleyes: Indeed the gulf is coming undone in a power/politics blame game before our eyes. And was said above and I'll add my thoughts on,,, Corporate Greed may have become the undoing of our world as we know it. That's not a slam against capitalism. We really don't have that anyways. But that's a whole other conversation...;)

Boy, I feel cheerful now...

I work in RF and at the Armys best EMP Blast Facility and its not as much of a concern as you think. Lighting strikes or High Power Microwave have much more damaging effects.

the levels of EMP required to seriously damage equipment is quite substancial so I think we will all be ok unless a 20 kilo nuke is going off in your back yard.

we test missles all day long aganst this stuff.... and ive only lost 1 cell phone and 1 labtop to numerous blast daily for the last 3 years.

Centralized as in I don't think there is a weapon out there yet besides a nuke that can cause massive electronic failure. I.E. a nuke detonated over LA wouldn't effect NY.
