black phosphate coating....i used product from Palmetto Enterprises. clean parts, then soak in EvapoRust, then boil in phosphate solution, drain and spray with WD40.

Eastwood used to have a phosphate coating kit.
or find a local coatings shop and bring your can of hardware for them to process. small batches usually by the pound.
