I am having my mechanic remove the engine in my car in the next week to basically seal it up due to oil leaks(its just easier with the engine out). I know that these engines leak but it has 128k miles and i need to do the timing chain anyways(i found pieces of the teeth in the oil pan). Question is: anything that you guys recommend doing since the engine will be out making it easier to do while its out(in the engine bay)? I bought a new front cover, timing chain with tensioner, cam button from nick micale. I have the rear main seal that i am changing while i am there, new oil drain tube, new gaskets. Am i missing anything? Thank you in advance.

Clean anything and everything you can and paint while it is out... The engine, parts and under hood. New thermostat, new bypass hose, new water pump

Sorry, i forgot to add, the new cover has the new gears with the plate to boost the oil pressure. I am installing a 160 dg thermostat and a new water pump. Which bypass hose are you referring to?

Just had mine done (timing set, front & rear main seals, oil pump, water pump, & cam button), too. Good time to clean out the intercooler. I also had the turbo oil supply & drain replaced, as well as both the oil cooler lines. Added a thrust plate (your new front cover probably came with one) & RJC "biggie" oil filter adapter at the same time.

Take the time to clean & paint everything as previously mentioned. I can't wait until my car gets painted, because the engine is coming out then, and detailing out the engine compartment is the icing on the cake. Degreaser & Satin black are your friends here.

The S hose, call GBody and get the silicon hose and be done with it for good

are you still running flat tappet cam? If so I would definately consider changeover to roller. Good luck you are probably evading some big headaches doing this now.

twodafloor: I will eventually rebuild the engine, i just dont have the funds for that right now. The motor has 128k miles and runs great other than the oil leaks.
turbofrank: i hear you, its just too many leaks! For example, i drive the car a few miles,i get it home, shut it off to wipe it down with a rag,i turn it on to put it in the garage and i will have a line of oil drops going into the garage. Is this normal? i have to do something plus the chain needs replacing. I wish i could afford to rebuild it head to toe but money is tight right now. A rebuild in these neck of the woods is easily 3-4k.

Engine out, it's a good opportunity to clean up the engine wiring harness, extend the grounds, replace bad connectors, clean and re-tape the whole thing.

Should i change the valve springs? This is not going to be a race car fyi. Just want it to be reliable with a little kick. Kirban has springs for $40.00

gnvenom: thank you, i will look it over.

Good time to also replace your steering box or steering shaft if you need to. Check headers for cracks.

those springs will work fine. If the drivers side header hasn't been welded it is cracked too. No idea why you'd replace the steering box if it doesn't need it.

If you plan on putting in heavier springs with a stock cam- penny wise pound foolish. Don't mind me, this will be good practice for the Next time you have to pull it.
