Xray would probably know this...
Was wondering if the thought was ever kicked around initially (when forming the project) X above and beyond the turbo, IC, chip, etc.

Anyone know

i've always wondered if they pondered at least pulling the motor apart and blueprinting everything to ideal tolerances and giving it a perfect balancing job.
seems that most low volume production "super cars" at least do that much.

According to the GNX book page 40.

"Original suggestions called for engine blueprinting, porting and the installation of special bearings, shot peened rods and a high-rpm valve train. Lower end durability was one area of concern. Another was that of casting flashings from heads and manifold getting into the turbocharger turning the ceramic impeller to dust. Modified and stock test engines were monitored during a full range of evaluation cycles with the net result ruling out modifications. There were no lower end failures on the stock engines, and high quality control precluded the need for smoothing out head and manifold ports. Production heads and manifolding were clean enough so that disassembly and grinding were not deemed necessary."

Hope that answers your question
