i always hear people say they had to go to an external wastegate. why/when do you have to go to an external wastgate? what are the pros and cons of them? and are they only necessary on very fast cars?

For a short answer, the reason for going to an external wastgate is usualy because you or a person has gone to a bigger turbo and a bigger turbo needs to have more pressure relieved to control boost. The port in most external wastgates is bigger than the stock one so it can control more boost.
Are they necessary only on fast cars? Yes unless you have a problem with your stock wastegate and can't fix it or your down pipe will not except a stock wastegate. I got into the mid 11's
with a stock gate.
