Latex surgeon gloves, no powder.

They work well for most jobs but will tear on sharp metal, and they deform when you get lots of gas on them.

Great for jobs where you use neverseize that stuff gets everywhere and is hard to get off of "stuff".

I'll second that.

I was forced to use them every day as a aircraft hyd mech, it takes some getting used to. Now I dont even want to mess with cars or any mechanic work without them.

That's what I'm sayin.
But when i go to the track I'll take some latex gloves, or just take some hand/baby wipes.

I only wear gloves for jobs that require gross motor skills, If it requires any thing fine being done I have to take them off to get the task done.


I wear a set of Mechanics brand I got at sears.

I generally agree with the "gloves are for wusses"

But not totally. I do like the walgreen examination rubber gloves but as stated they do get weak when dowsed with gas. I started using them when I cut the end of my index finger (Seveal stitches and lots a blood, still can't feel the end of it)and couldn't miss work. Wore them to keep the grease and dirt out of the wound and got to like them.

I also have a couple pairs of the heavier duty(not the impact kind) one mechanix and one craftsman pair. I only don them when it gets cold as they do restrict the dexterity and feel. Before I discovered them I use to cut finger holes in socks. I still use the sock with holes for dirty jobs when I'm wearing long sleaves. I slip um on up over the sleeves to keep the sleeve ends clean.

Well, if I didnt care how presentable I was or what kind of future skin disorders I might get I wouldn't wear gloves either. With the amount of mech work I do thats a real concern.

I've got much bigger things in mind than to waste my hands, health, and appearance on grease monkey work. Besides, I think its more professional to work with them, and all the assorted personal protective equipment, youd laugh if you saw me because when I go to the shop to work on the car i wear the same stuff I wear when im working on aircraft.
Safety boots, coveralls, latex or nitrile gloves, and depending on the task, eye protection.

getting a peice of steel lodged in my cornea anyway (despite wearing eye protection) priceless

I like the Doc gloves cheap and in the trash they go!

Yep just toss them in the trash, even if you rip a finger on them or two it cuts down on the GOJO cleaning.

And for the record, THERE IS NO DIRTY GREASE ON MARKS CAR.

Doing things like changing the cat. converter out in the car I always use old clothes as well and an old jacket and old cardboard to lay on.

And an old cap or wool cap. Ruined too many good caps working on the car with them on, you know the cap you wear to church and all.

No garage and 160K worth of dirt sand and grease on the car. :frown:

You guys that use Latex gloves have missed the boat...

There are Nitrile gloves on the market that are 50 times stronger and are resisistant to solvents and grease.

i use these every day and they are great....

i dont think so

we went from latex to nitrile because some people have latex allergies

comparing the regular thickness latex to regular thickness nitrile there isnt that much of a difference that I could tell. The nitrile are a little better but not by a whole lot. You will still be changing them frequently

now the thicker style nitrile gloves are a different story, those things are great

My Mom told me a million times not to exagerate but... the Nitrile are better...

Permatex brand are quite good... I've used the thick ones and they are very strong but I find my hands sweat too much...
