Anyone have a DVD/VCR Recorder Combo they can provide feedback on ?
Im in the market for one and not sure which are any good.

I dont care about integrated tuner or not as I woudnt use that, but just looking for any feedback if you have one of these...

We have one that is three models back from this one. 2006 vintage.

Sony DVD Recorder VCR combo

RDR-VX560 | DVD Recorder/VCR Combo | Sony | SonyStyle USA

Works great and is simple to use after reading the instruction manual.
I highly recommend it. After being stationed in Japan a long time ago, I learned that when it comes to electronics, Sony is by far the leader with regards to technology and reliability.

I just got the Magnavox DVD/VCR combo from Walmart $160, only to find out it dose not have a built in recever so it wouldnt record anything from the TV. I took it back and got the same one from Radioshack for $250 that has a recever in it. Now everything is working just fine and i have fewer boxes on top of the TV. I use it to convert old race VCR tapes over to DVDs and my wife uses it to record her soaps on to DVD-RW dvds so you can erase them over and over, no more buying VCR tapes. It took a wile to figuer it out but we like it. And it has a 1080P up grade in it that makes my old 780P picture look better also.

maybe a dvr would be better for someone like you. there are a few standalone dvr units that record onto a hard drive and don't require a monthly fee like tivo, but they are hard to find. i almost bought a Philips/Magnavox model about a year ago for $250 that had a 160GB hard drive in it and also could burn to DVD if you wanted to make a hard copy of something to keep. that model didn't have it, but i think they also made a model with a built in VHS player, too. it would be perfect in so many ways.

When i bought this set up i asked the guy at Radioshack about that. So being at the mercy of his knowledge he told me it would fill up the hard drive and charge me a monthly and this was a one time buy.

there are standalon DVR's out there that don't require a subscription- they hook up and operate just like a vcr. i know, because i've seen them and almost bought one a couple of years ago.
but every time i ask anyone at electronics stores, they give me a blank stare and tell me they all require a subscription and they've got some nice tivo boxes they'd like to show me.. dvr's came out about 10 years ago- first as an add on card for pc's, then as a standalone sert top box- and tivo came along shortly after with their subscription service and a big advertising budget. as soon as tivo came along, they figured out how to get people to pay for the privilege of recording shows and now people think that is the only way you can do it.

I have an older RCA unit (about 4 years old). I've always had good luck with RCA stuff.......until this one that is:frown: . The VCR part still works fine but the DVD part started giving trouble after about a year. The slightest smudge or scratch will make it not read a DVD. It will play fine for a while but then it will take a notion where it skips and freezes randomly too. The DVD only RCA that I have in my bedroom plays much better. This one just seemed to be a lemon so I have to say stay away from RCA recorders.
