Are people running fiberglass hoods using the center factory latch only? Do you need to use hood pins also to keep it from coming up in the corners. How fast are you guys going with only the factory center latch?

Let me know your thoughts.

Different car, but I have a fg hood with a 96 Camaro SS hood scoop, on my 68 Camaro using just the center latch, the car has seen 120+ several times and 140+ twice and the hood stayed nice and stable. Didn't even hint like it wanted to eject. The same hood is used by Chip Foose on his Foose designed 69 Camaro's that have the 572ci oomph to go much faster than my ZZ502 pushes my 68...but his cars go for a few hundred grand to rich car collectors and likely never see track time.

That's not to say the same would be true of an 80's g-Body is i've experienced with my 68 Camaro. The under hood pressure characteristics at speed might be totally different.

I've had a Kirban's fiberglass hood on my car using the factory center front latch for over 10 years now without any problem ever...

Claude

Have a Carbon fiber hood with the one stock latch , no problems . Car makes a gazilion h.p and runs 6 in the 1/4;)

Take the 05 and newer stangs for example...they need hood pins....the under hood pressure (due to the shape of the grill and the way the air enters and try's to leave) has been measured at 300+ lbs pressing up on the underside of the hood. Early glass hoods for these stang models were known to blow off...
Yikes.

Good to know the same would not happen on a GN. Hood pins just would not look right on these cars.

oh just a reference point my car has functional GNX vents so that could play into releasing underhood pressure .....................from the gazilon H.P

Gazillion????
That must be a lot.
But....is it more or leas than a brazilian?
The reason I ask is cuz I once read a story about how 3 brazilian people died at sea and I had to cry....but I never quite understood how many that actually is....it's gotta be a lot donchya think?
What a tragedy!!!
Geez...sniffle, snort....I need a tissue.

its on a scale of the alphabet .......so cazzilion would be more tha bazzilion and so on ...........so with gazilion H.P i basicly knock the earth off its axis when i try to launch the car . If you were refering to Brazilion , Gazilon is a small providence just outside , nice place to visit but you wouldnt want to live there .

Fiberglass hoods without hood pins makes you a ricer, I showed you a video of the hood that came off of a 3S that was making only high 11 second passes.

F-Hoods

F- Hood on our GN is well over 10 yrs. old no problemos with the stocker hood latch....Hood pins ricer look or not . As of late been giving it thought. Was thinking hood pins aren't just for holding your hood on but can be used as a theft detterant. Was thinking of getting a pair of locking Hood pins in anodized black from Hood pins .net, that way for Security reasons unplug orange wire , or use a battery disconnect switch, or put a hidden ignition kill switch in the engine compartment. They would have to go to alot of trouble of opening hood they'd literally have to tear the hood off and then deal with finding a switch. I'd have more peace of mind knowing they'd have to spend alot more Time then they'd want to trying to steal her.

I purchased a set of locking hood pins, but I do not think I am going to use them. Should a fire start under the hood I do not want the safety guys to have to get the keys from someone to open the hood.

My wife will be racing this car, I can replace the car. Finding some one who can put up with me would be nearly impossible.

Any install pictures of that oval looking thing?

Right now I have decided that there are plenty of guys going fast enough with out hood pins on the Buick Regal that I am not worrying about it.

My street car has years of mid ten sec passes at 126+ mph with a fiberglass hood with no pins and stock latch. And my race car runs almost 150 with a carbonfiber hood with no hood pins and the stock latch. I have never had any issues with either one. And I have a friend that goes 136-138 mph with no pins on a fg hood also with no issues. HTH
