Take out #1 spark plug and put your finger over the hole and have someone tap the key. When it blows your finger you are on the compression stroke.
From there you may have to turn the motor back a little and line up timming marks. Turn it back by means of the balancer bolt. line on balancer at 0, you got TDC.

Good luck

Rick

If you are turning backwards turn it well past the timing mark backwards and then go forwards again, that way any slack in the chain is taken up in the direction the motor turns.

just line the balancer mark with zero on the tab

there is no compression /exhaust stroke untill the valvetrain is installed sofeeling for pressure isnt nescessary
if the balancer is off set the keyway on the crank to 1:00 ,the crank gear dot will be pointing up 12:00 , this puts #1 cylinder at the top .
, when you install the cam youll see the cam gear can only go on one way , set the chain and gears together with dots together and slide it on the cam and crank so the dot on cam gear is at the 6:00 position and crank dot is at 12:00 . spin the cam to line up the bolt holes
once you have the cam bolts tightened you can reassemble the rockers and pushrods , with the rocker shafts in place and valvetrain completed and dots inline the motor is now at #1 TDC compression stroke

at this point install the cam button , slinger and tensioner asm. (if applicable) and double check that dots are in alignment and reinstall the timing cover , tighten the balancer bolt and without rolling the balancer around set the balancer mark at zero then prime the oil pump while cam sensor is out and then drop the cam sensor in dot on gear toward passenger fender , set cam sensor

You do not set the engine at TDC first, it will be there after you align the marks on the timing gears properly.

And to do that "properly", you'll need a degree wheel and a piston stop !
