Howdy gents, im in the process of fitting up the 87 turbo to my hotair car. Now my question is regarding how the turbo fits. I bolted on the 85 bracket, and the compressor housing is bigger around, so it rests on the crossover of the fuel rail before i can get the bolts to sit on the "heatshield" like the factory unit was done. I would go ahead and modify the bracket etc, but i dont want my stock up pipe etc.. to be too short. If you could let me know how you mounted this badboy, i would apreciate it. I am supposed to drive the car tomorrow, so im hoping to finish assembly this evening.

I/LL have to take a close look Friday. I don/t remember the compressor housing hitting the fuel rail. Without seeing your car, it is hard to speculate. Maybe you just need to rotate the compressor housing. I definately did not have to modifiy my support bracket or up pipe!!! Best of Luck to you

thanks lee

Lee, the compressor housing is bigger around (signifigantly) than the 85 unit is. I cant say for a fact that its a stock unit, but was told it is. I managed to make everything fit up alright, just that the compressor housing rubs on the fuel rail. Is there any possibility i will have problems with heat transfer into the fuel rail?

I put an 86 turbo on my 84 with the TM set (indexed},but it fit just fine. I used the ATR uppipe and DP and it seemed to me to fit better than the 84 turbo. HTH.

Would anyone with the 86/87 turbo put on an 84/85 GN please post some pics of the install so I can get a better idea of how this is done.

fit

Your right that the 87 is larger in dia. than an 85. I looked at mine yesterday, it is close to the fuel rail but not touching it. Maybe 1/16 to 1/8 in clearance. Mine is sitting all the way to the bottom of the 2 slots in the bracket.

TURBO

hey my Ta-49 hit the fuel rail in the back. i never noticed it till i pulled the turbo off and saw some of the paint missing. and some scaring from the turbo. Now that im putting a Ta-54 i will make sure it doesnt.
