What is the size of the fitting that is in the stock oil cooler that the two hoses thread into?
If not the size, then what type fitting is this called?

Thanks for the help!!

I believe they are single flared pipe fittings.

Measure the tube with some calipers to get the sizes.

Pretty sure the pipe OD gives the size should be 5/16" or 3/8".

I'll guess 3/8" for now until I get out to measure mine.

If you get a slightly larger measurement then it's the tube ID that matters for the measurement. ;)

I believe they are #6 or 3/8" inverted flare not sure if they are 37 deg or 45 deg. I'm leaning towards 45, because 37 is JIC territory and I believe that the inverted flares are not JIC making them 45's. Don't quote me on that though, you will want to pull the hoses and take them to a place that fabricates hyd hose and pick their brains, thay have charts and more knowhow than myself and could tell you exactly what you have on your hands.

Oil cooler line is the big one. :)

I measured exactly 1/2" OD on the pipe part. Measures about .410"on the ID of the flared pipe.

Soooo it's either 1/2" or 3/8" flared pipe.

First post I was thinking tranny cooler lines.

I agree taking them to the old hydraulics store is a good idea. ;)

3/4"

Just checked that if you have a flared pipe connection you use the OD of the pipe.

Should be 1/2" flared pipe most likely 45* automotive type angle and not the usual hydraulic shop 37* JIC angle. Have to verify this fact first.

A good shop should have both fittings available. :)

I was stating if you go someplace to get a fitting or new hose made and you told them 3/4 inch you would ge tsomething WAY too big. When making hoses you use the inside diameter for a measurement. For example in Hyd hoses a 3/4 inch hose has an outside diameter of over an inch and requres an 1 1/8 inch wrench to get on the fitting. Just like a brake line it may be a 1/4 inch brake line but it will take an 7/16 wrench to tighten it and the treads will be in the 3/8" range.

I'm just trying to steer people in the right direction and keep them from heading the wrong one. Don't take offence.

PaulRV6 if your not worried too much about looks I got an old set here that I took off my car cause they weren't show worthy. They arent pretty but they work.I'd replace the o-rings if I were going to use them.I'd take $10 +$4 for shipping.Email me if you want them.

Thanks for all the replies guys. What I am actually doing is installing an oil cooler to replace the "in rad" one. I am trying to reuse the stock hoses (if they are long enough) to go onto the new cooler. I want to start looking for the proper fitting to from 1/2"NPT (on cooler) to what ever the hose end size is.

So 2NASSTYBUICKS, I am not looking for a set of hoses, but thanks.

Tom, not sure why the link to that site unless there is some hidden sizing for hose fittings

So you guys say it is either 3/8" or 1/2" 45 deg inverted pipe flare? I probably will take it to a shop for confirmation but in the meantime I wanted to start searching out the fittings. Thanks all.

I'd go with the 1/2" inverted flare pipe at 45* angle myself. :)

Is the 1/2" NPT on the cooler male or female?

If it's female look at the adapter end down at the oil pump extension where the other end of the hose is near the oil pump.

It has an NPT adapter already on it. Forgot if it's 1/2" or 3/4" that's where I put my oil temp. gauge using an NPT street T fitting. ;)

2nasstybuicks,

sent you a private message about the oil cooler hoses.

I removed the radiator from my '87 this past weekend, and of course I had to remove the oil cooler lines.

The fittings at the radiator end are definitely SAE Inverted Flare (the style used on brake lines).

The I.F. "nominal" size is 1/2", meaning it's intended for use on 1/2" OD tubing.

The male nut is threaded 3/4"-18, but this is NOT the size fittings are sold by ... this would be considered a 1/2" fitting.

As long as the catalog refers to the fitting as an "SAE" Inverted Flare (the most common type), then you'll get the correct angle on the sealing surfaces.
