floor pan questions

I have pretty rusted out floor pans in my buick and I have a parts car to steal the floor pans out of and I was wondering if it would make sense to just cut the replacement floor pan a couple inches wider on all sides and just pop rivet it back into place or should I mess with trying to get the piece measured out perfectly in the hole and tack weld it.
