I should have mentioned this was from a car my friend bought had a knock on a rebuild with 4k miles
he bought car assuming the engine was junk.

Rebuild is the key word. Rebuilt with parts out of the scrap pails

Well then that's pretty good it lasted 4k miles.

the ring end gap was only enough to get a piece of paper folded in half in the gap

Car was bought from an individual in North Texas who did name a well known crappy builder.
I find it hard to believe even he assembled this turd, he left the country years ago so not worth mentioning names.
 
Not to mention they look like there would probably be a decent weight difference as well. I bet it had a noticable vibration.

My machinist pretty much insisted on balancing mine. After seeing how bad it was out, I'm sure glad I did.
