What do you guys recommend as far as frame paint? I'm re-doing a rolling frame for an '87 GN I purchased, as I thought I would ask the experts. Thanks for the help & info.

Powder coat is best but I'm going to try Eastwood's Ceramic Chassis black on the engine compartment while my motor is out

ive used rust bullet ( great success ) and also kbs coatings ( not so good ). make sure that you scuff each layer applied, and be sure to pretreat your metal with metal ready or something similar to etch the surface of the raw steel for better adhesion

Yeah Alan I have thought about the PC route, but I'm sort of an "original, stock appearing the way it came from Flint" kind a guy! I think we've settled on an etching primer/chassis paint combo, so now I just gotta "git r dun".

Thanks for the suggestions guys. TB.com rocks :D

i used valspar tractor and implement paint from tractor supply for inside my trunk. it's available in a low gloss black, it takes awhile to harden up real good, (it's oil enamel). i got this tip from a restore shop, and would paint my frame with it, but you have got to get rid of any rust and use a good primer first. 1 gallon with hardener for ~45-50.00

POR-15 here as well, if I had it to do over again would be powdercoated!

Let's see some pictures. I'll contribute when I get to that phase.

My thoughts as well. How many times are you gonna have the frame out? Just as well spend the money and powerdercoat it. Por 15 is ok for floors and stuff but not good enough for the frame as far as I'm concerned. If you don't have the $$$ por15 is a cheap alternative, but it just isn't durable enough in my opinion.

“Cheap alternative”
I wouldn’t exactly call $44.00 a quart cheap plus all of the prep materials needed.

I don’t know how good Powder is on a frame??
BUT I can tell you that after 2 years and about 14k Miles (rain or shine in the North East) the bottom of my car still looks new.

Mike, glad to see you still around. Last time I talked to you I thought you were getting out of the TR game. Anyway, as far as paint, DuPont used to have a "Chassis Black" that was supposed to be the same formula that GM used at that time. I don't know if they still make it but we sure used to sell a fair amount of it back when I worked at Big A in the early 90's.

Thanks for everyone's input.

Hey there Randy. Yeah I did take a leave of absense from the game, but I never completely got out. Most all of my parts were stolen from me on March 1, 2007, but I'm in the process of recouping my losses. Thanks for the paint info. I forgot all about you working down there. I passed that place recently on the way down to the Rock actually. Take care buddy.

If I was going to liquid paint a frame I would use a nasty 'o 2 part epoxy primer tinted black and top coat with a good automotive black.

But you know my choise..........

What prep materials? A wire wheel to bust all the loose rust off and a spray bottle to flash rust the bare metal? I guess when you factor in your time involved cleaning the frame and painting it, it's expensive when it comes to your time. 400 bucks to have the frame blasted and powdercoated by someone else while you use that time to spend time with your family it's well worth it. THAT'S why I would powdercoat if I was to do it again.
