I'm building a fuel supply for a hybrid, and while it may neck down as you say, the line starts and ends with the same saginaw fitting. The pump hanger has a male end, and the stock fuel line that feeds the fuel rail has a female end. I elected to use a stock filter thinking that one would be available anywhere should the need arise.
 
I checked out that piece you welded up, but that's different than what I need. I need male to male. I want to screw the fitting into the stock return line under the engine, then attatch a -6 to that which I will connect to the original fuel line. Alternatly, I have a new hard line for the return line, but it's Regal specific. I can probably make it work, or maybe cut that fitting off of it to weld to a -6 male like you did (except I can't weld).
