Fuel guage and pump help needed

Ready to go racin tomorrow but new probs arise. My car will sputter and backfire when I try to start it at times, Sounds like I am out of gas so I add more and it runs fine for a while. Then it repeats itself again. When it stumbles and dies the fuel pressure guage drops below 40lbs and fluctuates back and forth. After several starts it will run fine. Is their a way to run a wire to my Red A double pumper to make sure its stays running at the races? I took it out of the tank today and all looks fine. It has a hot wire set up at my altenator. Also the fuel guage does not register the fuel level when assembled. Take it out of the tank and hook up the wires it registers fine re-install and stays on empty. Thanks for any ideas By the way I know its the pump because after a few times of adding fuel to start the car my tank is now to the top
