Garage Door Spring broken

The spring on my Garage door just broke. There are two....one one each side of the center line. Springs under tension kinda scare me. Is this a DIY job or do I need to get a professional to do it? Are these springs generic or do I have to look at the brand name of the door?

We had new ones installed at my work. Even the guys that done them for us looks freaking dangerous!! But we had 14' doors lots of tension on the springs. We had to replace the whole door cause they did not have the springs any more.

There are some good YouTube videos on how to do it. Definitely replace both because the other is probably not far from breaking too. If you want a professional do it, there are coupons for a lot of them. I see them in those valuepaks that show up every month. At least that is how it is around me. You might find one in that book that shows up once a year that just ends up in the recycle bin.

I had one break few years back put a hole in the wall. I would let a professional do it. Risk is to great.

Get some good bars to wind the spring and take your time. No more dangerous than owning a TR!

Not sure what kind of opener you have but what I did was get the model # and I think the weight of your garage door, then Lowes has different colors depending on the # spring you need. The newer springs have a safety wire going through the springs so if it breaks it won't take out your eye or wall. I did it myself and I can't do much. I installed them with the garage door up ( no/less pressure on the spring). Do both of them.

The company that did mine was reasonable and I saw no reason to DIY. They were the service team for the doors manufacturer. It was like $200 for both springs. The springs themselves would cost 1/2 that. I paid $100 to not get hurt. Winner winner chicken dinner.

My 1 car shop door has 2 springs, one on each side. One broke, I bought new springs and replaced them. Pretty much no tension on the springs with the door up. The big double door on the house is a different story. One big spring on it. It has broken twice in 14 years and I paid someone to replace it twice. I'm not going to mess with it.

I did my own a few years back. The guy I found with the parts even sent two metal bars (tools)along with the spring. Took about an hour to do.
