gas tank internal wires

Are the wires inside the tank anything special due to the constant contact
with fuel?

Yes, should be a Teflon insulation with a nickel-copper wire. Although the nickel-copper wire may be overkill, not sure whether it is really required over straight copper. The Teflon insulation is a requirement.

For a DIY person, the Teflon/nickel-copper wire can be had from GM TBI harnesses. It is used within the TBI where it is exposed to fuel. Some harnesses have it spliced in close to the TBI. While others have it from TBI to the ECM.
