I was on the phone with Jason of RJC today and causally mentioned my smoke at idle after a drive. Car runs great, but at idle smokes like I'm trying to start the field on fire.... It's a rebuilt old school TE-62 lasted about 1yr in the fresh motor. Wondering if I should put new seals in myself, I've done a few turbo rebuilds on my workbench and they held up....but a pro re-built it and it lasted a yr.
Or just put my tried and true TE-44 on it and see if I can reach my 11.50 1/4 mile goal that I went under with the 62 @ 22 psi (ran a 11.21 @ 122.7)
I went right to the 62 on the fresh motor leaving the perfectly good TE-44 on the bench.... I know it's on the small side for my motor but with no roll cage and 98% street use, I think this will do. I have a few months to decide the car is at the body shop for a badly needed paint job.
On the other hand I've noticed some really good deals by the members here stepping up to the next level .......not exactly sure what I should be looking for. Also noticed some great deals by the vendors from time to time....
Car has a PTC 3200 lock-up stall, I don't lock the converter when I race, save it for the highway mpg, I burnt the last converter lock-up clutch out which was a vigilante single disc.

The TE-62 hasa bad rep. I would put back on the Te-44 or buy a 6152 for your goals.. Who built the TE62 that only lasted a year...

Well I'm trusting a fellow Buick Brother that was selling it in Ohio BPG Nationals 3yrs ago. I was gathering parts for my fresh motor for awhile.

Pte 6765 h

So my car is in the body shop and I've been window shopping.... I know that currently I wouldn't need all this potential, but Cotton has this on his web site and it looks pretty sweet... with the 3200 stall would be cutting it close, but I think it would work with my combination at a low enough boost to stay at 11.50 in the 1/4
mile.

I bet you would be happier if you sent your PTC 3200 back to Dusty for a freshen up and restall. Have PTC tighten to 2200-2400 and keep the newer TE-44.

Bet ya this combo would feel better than a PTC3200 and a 67 turbo. Sell the 62 and use the money for the restall & refreshing TC then use the 44. Put the extra money in your pocket.

To get a 3200 stall to work the car will need to turn 5700-5800 rpm. For an 11 second car I like to keep the turbo's smaller like the new 6265 dbb as the largest. This allows you to run a 2800 stall which will deliver better efficiency unlocked. Locking a single disk can kill it quickly.

The old school TE-62's definately need a 3200 stall to work well and may not be a good match for an engine unless you have some rpm range. The only way to have a 3200 stall for the old school 62's and also be efficient at 5400-5800 shift point is to swap to a non lock converter like my 9.5.

I leave the car in drive and it shifts just over 6000, seems to pull hard up top, but I'm easy to impress....
I'm not what you would call a competitive racer, I just like to drive to the track with my 3 boys(half the fun is getting there) run a few runs, hang out in the pits with the other Buick owners.... happy with 11.5 time slips on a easy launch, 5-8lbs boost. The car has been going faster each time I get to the track, need to port the wastegate hole bigger on the 62 turbo. 22lbs is all the further I can turn it down.
Since I don't feel like wrenching, maybe I should just rebuild the 62 and port the wastegate hole some more....
Thanks for the thoughts on this, anymore?
So if I want to step up to the plate on the new turbo's get a 6262 or a 6265..... I hate to say it BB... (hard to justify extra money to a part time racer like me)

With your car shifting at 6000 the 3200 stall should work pretty well.

I'd probably throw the TE-44 on it to see if you can run your desired et's without the smoke while you put seals in the TE-62.

With the shift rpm where it's at, you can get by with a non bb turbo if you decide to upgrade. I still like the 6262 or 6265.

So is the smoking due to shaft play or oil blowing past the seals?

If it's B, then what are you using for oil feed lines, stock, PTE -4 etc?

Funny you ask, because when I put it on the shaft had a little play side to side, but did not rub the wall. So the answer to the 1st question, I don't know yet, on the way to the body shop I had to idle for a while ..... started smoken pretty good, a tow truck stopped and asked if I needed a tow.
The oil feed line is from the remote oil filter system, I got it on the board here, he got it from Jack Cotton, sure it's a PTE with the upgraded fancy lines to the oil pump.

This really has me thinking, would be nice for once, to be up to date on the turbo technology. I've read good things about the new billet 6262 and the 6265..... hmmm, thanks alot for your thoughts guys.

You'll get a tad side to side, it's in and out that says the shaft is in need of attention.

Sounds like you need to go to the -3 feedline to the turbo. I used SS brake line so the line and fittings were top notch. Figure out how many feet you need and see if you can either do a reduce fitting from -4 to -3 on the line or if you need to do the reducer off each fitting on the PTE and turbo first.

Im like Chuck here, not really a competitive racer. I just wanted a fast street car. When my TE-62 came up for sale, brand new zero mile for a cheap low price, I jumped. Havent had any problems in the year since and it been fun as hell.

Granted Im running a 9.5" single disc which works great, maybe not 100% capacity on the stock heads/cam (Im getting to that); but I like it. I really do. The turbo comes up fast on the street and like Chuck, 5-8psi launchs on 25spi gives me 11.50 timeslips. On a car I drive to the track.

Chuck, whatever you do I know you'll end up with a fast car. Not to mention a very pretty one.:)
