Brett,
Best information says that the GNX wheels were indeed clearcoated, including the externally-visible polished areas.
Further supporting this I have pictures of a rather infamous GNX after aggressive detailing with improper cleaners. ASC told me specifically that this is what resulted in damage to the clearcoat. This shot is from 11/2006 at ASC shortly before they sold this car.
