1/8th mile track, street legal "fast and furious" grudge style racing. what kind of times/speeds should i expect from my mostly stock 84 T?
it is stock except for the big K&N cone fillte, gutted cat, Flowmaster exhaust kit, GTA wheels with 245/50/16 Fuzion tires, and B&M shift kit.
it will have half a tank of E85 fuel (it LOVES that stuff. and i do , too, for $1.45 a gallon) mixed in with half a tank of 93 octane, and it usually puts out around 17psi of boost when i really get on it.
i am not expecting the low to mid 8 second/85-87 mph traction limited blasts i got out of my Nova last year, but i think it should do ok.

Do you have a after market boost and knock gauge or a scan tool? How do you know how much real boost you are pushing? A true 17ibs boost with your setup is a sure way to knock and at the least a blown head gasket. In my case I lost a new engine. Just my 2 cents. Brad.

P.S. I would guess that you are a 6.5 zero to sixty and a 14.5 quarter.

no scan tool (yet) but someone did hack up the dash filler on the passenger side a long time ago and put an Autometer mechanical boost gauge in there, along with an oil pressure, water temp, and non functional trans temp gauge.
so you think 17 psi is too much for the 99 or so octane mixture i'm running? i can't even get audible knock at all when i put E85 in it even if i try, and it only makes a little noise on hot days under heavy loads with straight 93 octane. and, yes, i know that even silent detonation can be fatal, but i think i'm safe for now.
a scan tool will be in the works when i have the extra $$$ after making the house payment and keeping the lights turned on.
i do know that with the E85, i don't lose too much economy and it feels like it gains 50 hp. if i could get it in town here and not have to drive 15 miles one way, i think i'd run the stuff all the time. i do know that at under $1.50 a gallon, it sure is fun filling up after a couple of years of buying $2 a gallon gas.

Whats E85? Race fuel? What octane? Were would you find this at, ex. air strip? A knock gauge isn't much money and you need it!!! Thanks, Nick.

E85 is 85% ethanol/15% gasoline and is available at a growing number of gas stations around here. it is supposed to be used only in newer "flex fuel" cars and trucks, but the local circle track guys discovered that it works good in their race cars and is technically a "pump gas" as required by the rules, so they started using it and winning.
the E85 folks actually sponsor a race series in the midwest now.
it has an octane rating of 105 and costs around 50 cents less per gallon than regular 87 octane unleaded.
it works really good in efi cars with high static compression and a MAF sensor- and works REALLY good in efi cars with a MAF sensor and a turbo.
my Regal LOVES the stuff, and actually 2 weekends ago, i hit 19mpg on a 130 mile interstate drive at 80mph with 3/4 of a tank of the stuff. i was impressed- it only gets 17 on 93 octane, and the mpg usually goes down to 14 or so when i run E85. but even then, it still costs less per mile than 93 octane at $2.12 a gallon.
the only real downside i've experienced using the stuff is that the car is a little cold blooded when started cold- kind of like an old carb engine without a choke. but after 30 seconds of idling, it runs like a champ. and the exhaust smells cool, too.
look for an orange pump at the gas stations- a few of the places around here changed one pump from diesel to E85. it should be available in Wisconsin- last time i checked, there were a lot of corn farmers there looking for a way to make money off their crops, and Ethanol production seems to be the way they are doing it around here.

Food for thought- I blew the passenger side cylinder head 1/8 inch off the block due to detonation and never once did I ever hear knock. I now have a knock gauge and have turned the boost down to 10-12ibs. I got bad advice from my mechanic and a vendor and boy did it cost me. Brad

i don't think detonation is going to blow a head of the block- unless all the bolts broke and there was detonation in all 3 cylinders- not normal "ping-ping-ping" type knock, but rather a top fuel style engine backfire.
i know detonation is the bane of a turbocharged car- but i'll put some faith in the engineers that built the car and the bean counters that allowed such a timebomb out for public consumption and just have fun with it.if it blows, i'll make it better and stronger.
if not, i'll still make it better and stronger down the line.

so, can anyone guess some 1/8th mile times and speeds?

This is ALL a guess right?

Part of my guess is from a spreadsheet in GNTTYPE.
I added somew things such as temp and estimated intake temp, efficiencies, boost etc.

Made a lot of BIG ASS-Umptions - 17 PSI boost

Esrtimated Rear Wheel HP 247 RW-HP
Car weight + driver 3700 lbs
1/8 Mile E.T. - Estimate 9.19 sec
1/4 Mile E.T. - Estimate 14.36 sec plus reaction
1/4 Mile - Speed Estimate 94.9 sec plus reaction

What do you think?

NOVADERRICK- I blew the engine up because I did not have and aftermarket boost, knock, nor scan tool. I had the adj. waste gate actuator set to maximum boost and was driving around blind. The engine gave out going up a hill. The stock idiot lights are worthless. My mechanic set the boost on my new motor at 18ilbs(found out with a real boost gauge) with no knock gauge. Put in a knock gauge and had to reduce the boost down to 12ils on 93 octane to drastically reduce knock. Just my thoughts. Brad

ok.. best time 9.683 and best speed 73.65 on different passes.
got 11 runs in.
i was having trouble either building boost on the line (starter was running the tree really fast), or getting the rear brakes to hold. either way i ended up with horrible short times- 60 foots were in the 2.5 second range usually. i was playing with different shift point and what not each time- the best times and speeds were when i just left it in "D" and held the pedal to the floor.
the most boost i actually saw on the gauge the few times i actually looked at it going down the track was 15 or so.
only a second and 13 mph off the times my 400 hp 4 speed Nova was doing last summer..
now i have a baseline from which to build upon..

Novaderrik,

Have you done anything to the car's fuel system to ward off the extreme corrosive action of the ethanol?

HOW

Went back to see if my calcs / correlations are correct with some of my ASS-U-M-ptions. Plugged in 15 psi boost

Esrtimated Rear Wheel HP 227 RW-HP
Car weight + driver 3700 lbs
1/8 Mile E.T. - Estimate 9.46 Sec plus reaction
1/4 Mile E.T. - Estimate 14.78 Sec plus reaction

What were your reaction times?

Experts, PLEASE chime in ...
I ran the calc at 20 psi boost and inserted the alky variable. Got these numbers. Do they seem realistic? Just looking for a way to predict a few options.

Esrtimated Rear Wheel HP 293 RW-HP
Car weight + driver 3700 lbs
1/8 Mile E.T. - Estimate 8.66 sec
1/4 Mile E.T. - Estimate 13.56 sec
1/4 Mile - Speed Estimate 100.5 sec
