What's a good, readily available cam that won't require shortening my guides? I don't want to do anything to my valvetrain/heads, but pocket port, and install new springs/seals.

How about just a stock grind? Autozone. Cam & Lifters - $130.

I wasn't aware that any of the popular grinds out there required valve guides to be shortened..then again i've never used anything but a factory grind.

I'm thinking about going stock again. I wonder who grinds Autozone's cams? My #3 exhaust lifter bore is off a bit(the reason these engines wipe cams), and I want the best made cam I can find. I just assembled my shortblock with a Comp 260H-12(.457" lift), and then heard something about anything over .420" lift causing problems. I need to get this engine back in fast, and don't have time for further machine work. I figure it'll be easier/faster to swap the cam back out, if I need to. Right now: I'm fishing for info as to whether I need to.

You probably heard .520 to start checking. Anything up to .500 will never cause a problem. Frank

Hi Frank- I went back to my GMHTP magazine article: 'Buick Power 101 Part III'. (Sept/Oct 2002). That's where I read a quote from the builder/machinist stating, "Note that retainer-to-guide interference becomes a problem when lift exceeds about .420-inch if the valve guide is unmodified."(page 31, top left pic caption) I guess that must have been a typo that no-one ever caught(no letters to the editor, or corrections). Thanx for putting my mind at ease. What is the lift on a stock cam(by the way)? PS: Is your 212-212 a Comp Cams? If so- how'd it work for you?

Yeah it is a Comp Cam 212-212 and it worked awsome and pulled hard!! Frank

It's very inexpensive to have the guides machined for high lift clearance and for the teflon seals. I don't see a reason why not to do it. We only charge $2.00 per guide on our ported heads.

I'm trying not to have to change as much as possible. I've already got a new Comp 260H-12 installed in my short block, so I don't need any machining after all. My concern was based on a typo in GMHTP(see above). Thanx for the guide tips though. ;)
