Today was the opening day of our local track. Perfect weather, sunny with a high of 68. They even put down some VHT...unheard of at this track.

I built this stock blocked engine (or as I like to refer to it as my illegal TSM engine) over a year ago and put it into my T-Type last summer. Used it a bit on the street for break-in, then took it to Las Vegas in October. I had also put in at the same time a new 9/11 converter, not TCS's. The converter proved to be a piece of crap and wouldn't allow me to spool up on the line. I ended up running a 12.01 at 127 on the best mph run. I was impressed with the power but really pissed with the crappy converter. A blown head gasket ended my Vegas trials.

I removed the engine this past winter to replace the gaskets, and while it was out I decided to send the M&A heads back to Dan Strezo for a checkup....which I should have done originally. Dan found 2 bent valves so he replaced them and did some other work. These heads were put back on the after some street use in the last 2 weeks then I took it to the track today. And I'd added a TCS 9/11. Even though it wasn't the 3800 stall at zero boost I'd ordered, (it's a 3100 at zero) it would still spool.

First pass was an 11.02 @ 127.17. I wasn't unhappy with this as the FAST fuel map needed some work.

Second pass was 11.33 @ 127.43. Fuel map was closer for the 12 lbs of boost (psia) I was running on both these passes but I did a lot of spinning off the line. I was unhappy with this pass.

Third pass will go down in the GN hall of fame. A track blistering, spectator rousing, neck breaking, tire packing 43.77 @ 26.965 mph. Immediately after launch the engine just cut out. I couldn't give it any gas over an idle and embarassingly drove the whole length of the track at 26 mph.

Once back in the pits I couldn't find any obvious reason for the problem but since I don't have any confidence in the MSD box I'd moved over from my stage car, I decided to disconnect it. And bingo, that was the problem. Those boxes are crap.

I went back to the lanes right away and even though they had closed them for more qualifying they knew of my bad last pass and let me run anyway. It hooked well, and ran well. A 10.63 @ 130.06. A 1.64 60'. Daaaamn.

This pass was at 17.02 lbs psia as recorded on FAST, which consistently seems to be about 4 lbs lower than gauge. Confirmed, as I had seem between 21 and 22 lbs on the gauge.

I'm looking forward to next week as I'll up the boost and see how fast this engine will go. Hopefully I'll stop crankin' on the boost regulator before I get into the detonation/head gasket blowing area.

What turbo you running?

It's a 4 bolt 66. Supposed to move within one lb of air of a TSM legal 3 bolt 70. Along with Dan Strezo's profile 214 cam. It's a ductile iron roller by the way.

Dude that thing will fly on 24 psi. :D

Good runs.

What's illegal about the combo.?

You got safety equipment or something?

  ;)

The 4 bolt turbo is illegal for TSM....only 3 bolt ones are allowed. Plus I have a BGC manifold on it. Also illegal for TSM.

Judging from what I see you are doing, am I right to assume that 66 is a Q trim right? My 66 is P trim.

At first it was a Q trim. It wouldn't spool. I sent it back to John at Limit and he switched the wheel out for the P trim.

I made a mistake by assuming the lack of spool was the turbo and not the converter.

I talked to John in Vegas and apologized to him for my bad diagnostic decision. I may return the turbo again and have it reconverted to a Q trim but at the moment I'm reasonably happy with this turbo as it is.

Great times Chris.
I like you have found that spoling the Q wheel has everything to do with the converter. Nothing we did with the tune would spool it any faster until the converter was changed.
