Kevin, I would start out by measuring the force of the original light weight spring and the Steve V. blue spring. I did this using a 0 to 200 gram scale i bought on Amazon. I set up some parallels on either side of the scale, placed spring on the center of the scale, placed a steel ruler over the spring till it compressed to the parallels height. Do this for both springs. Not perfect but will give you data on which spring tension is less or more. Hopefully, the new blue spring has less tension and i would try it in the governor to see what the shift points are. If it's not enough you will need to grind weight off the little governor weight first. Mine was right at 14.80 grams on my 1986 CZF trans. I ground it down to 14.65 grams and I reassembled the governor and tried it. It went up some but not to 5500 rpm's as I wanted. I then ground the little weight to 14.57 grams along with taking the heavy weight from 34.57 grams to 34.25 grams. I now have the 2 to 3 shifts at 5300-5400 but my 1 to 2 shift is at 4800 rpm's up from 4600 rpm's originally. Studying the hydraulics of the 2004R once both check balls on the governor are closed - weight swung out fluid pressure has to over come the 1 to 2 shift valve and spring in the valvebody. I am thinking the 1 to 2 shift valve spring is a tad weak causing the early 4800 rpm shifts. I tried another 1987 CZF governor that shifted 1 to 2 at 5500 rpm's in the different 1987 2004R. It would shift the 1 to 2 also at 4800 rpm's in the 1986 CZF so I believe I need to remove and measure the 1 to 2 shift valve spring from both 1986 and 1987 CZF' to determine if it's that spring in the valve body then needs to have more tension. So, to recap... 1. Get shift points data on current state 1 to 2 and 2 to 3. 2. If not high enough - measure spring force and use the less tension spring on the light weight. Get shift data. 3. If not high enough use lightest governor spring and start grinding weight off just the small governor weight. I would not go more that 14.50 grams. 4. If still not enough I would take some weight off the heavy weight to minimum weight of 34.25 grams. All 2004R's will change differently on the governor mods. Go slow on removing weight of the governor since it is a permanent change.
Thanks, Craig
