GT6152+TE44=great... PT51=POS..???

So what gives.........the GT6152 is well loved so far, and has the "infamous" -POS- T350 turbine wheel that gave the PT51/52 such a bad rap with failures. The TE44/TA-49, "the street terror" has the 2.290" 44-trim inducer wheel, exact same as the PT51..........WHAT'S UP!!!???

If the GT6152 is the "new" great turbo, and the TE44/49 was "the" great turbo of yesterday.....why was the PT51 such a POS???????

Experts chime in please....I have a PT51 with a "chewed" turbine wheel I'm having second thoughts on getting re-built by Limit.....Chopper says they're good turbos by the way. Thanks.

JUST A GUESS... but maybe it wouldnt balance out very well since a 44mm compressor wheel is alot smaller than the stage V exhaust wheel leading to premature bearing failure and damaged blades... now you even it up with a larger and more equal 61mm wheel and it balances much better [all while flowing much better] but then again......just a guess:redface:

I hear Limit does good work..........should I get my TA-51 re-built, or would I be much happier with a GT6152??? Has anyone run both with a similar combo to mine?

My combo is..... 60lb. Siemens, AlkyControl, Eric Marshall chip for Alky, Powerstroke FM, Pat's 10" 3200 l/u, CK Stage I tranny, RJC power plate, Hooker 2.5" exhaust, Terry Houston DP, Walbro 340 (hot/w), BFG Drag Radials............etc........

My friend ran very low 11's with a PT6152S and a combo very similar to yours.
Maybe Don will speak up here.

IMO, you will be very happy with a 6152, especially if your goals are mid to low 11's.
As far as my thoughts on the original title of the post........

All I can say is, others ran the 51 and 52 turbos for years on other applications without any hassles. Small V8 twin setups, single setups on Sport Compacts, etc, etc. Technology progressed and they both were "pwned" by the performance results of the 6152.

The PT51 did not actually use the same exhaust wheel as the TE-44 or TA-49. It used its own exhaust wheel. I don't know what the PTE website says, but it is wrong. There were real technical reasons why that particular exhaust wheel failed, but they did correct the issue right away way back when.

As for the 6152, the reason it is so good is because it uses a GT35R compressor wheel (61mm inducer). It is MUCH more efficient than any comparably sized compressor wheel. It makes more horsepower at less boost essentially. From what I remember, that compressor is about 78% efficient between 20-22 psi of boost which is VERY good.

I actually used to run a TE-44 on my full weight GN down to the 11.70's at about 115 mph. This was on a bone stock motor at about 28 psi. The 61 was run down to 11.12 @ 119 mph on only 25 psi of boost. That compressor wheel is good up to 35 psi in some applications other than Buicks.

Now I have the 6776 dual ball bearing. I'm pretty sure I'll blow my stock bottom end out before anything, but the reason why I got it was because I want to run good horsepower on the street with straight pump gas. Basically I plan on running around 20-22 psi of boost on straight 93 with my current setup. Not to mention the thing spools just as fast as my 61 did, if not quicker. I haven't really played with it yet since my car last saw the street back in October and that was only a few trips around the block!

That car has to be the fasted pt51 powered car out there.

At 25 psi of boost and a perfect tune at the track that day, it was running great.

The cam forgives a little knock retard, adds a lil more lift and didnt really take full advantage of revving the engine past 5200.

Chopper at Limit re-built my PTA-51 with the original turbine wheel, and replaced the regular compressor wheel with a 60-1 piece.....(60mm??)..........he said it would make 90 more hp. at full boost.........huh???? Is that comp. wheel that much better than the 58mm wheel he replaced??? Or have I just been had by a salesman that had a spare 60-1 wheel laying around???? (he didn't push it on me at all though.....)

:biggrin: :biggrin: :biggrin: Thats me! Yes, 1-2 shift was 5000-5100 and I manually shifted the 2-3 around 5200. If I ran it up higher to say 5400 the car slowed down a tenth. It loved to be loaded down, pulled like a SOB out the back door! Yes, FULL WEIGHT 86 GN Hardtop, with FULL STEREO in the trunk too! Guess the POS PT51 works for me huh?

Jay, its been years since the car had a stock cam. But, I will say after changing cam, the cars midrange felt MUCH stronger even back when it was stock turbo/IC w/ blue tops. RPM range stayed about the same, see above post.

Fastest PT51 Turbo car sounds like a good title to have, but Im not about to claim it. Ive been wanting to change turbo's for a while now, but the car just loves the combo thats on it. I want to run 10's with the 51, and I will someday when I get off my ass and start messing with the car again.

Yeah, I remember........ I still had the GTA wheels on, and you where asking about the Powerstroke install. Then we got on the discussion of the 51 turbo and the times the car was turning......... whats going on man? TAKE THOSE MUFFS OFF, lol. Thats gotta be 3 tenths, lol. JK. I dont know what kinda timing your running in your chip, but my car really liked 28* in 1st and 2nd, and 27* in 3rd, converter locked on the line. As always, be carefull when turning it up, do it in small steps! Call Eric @ Turbotweak and he may have my race chip on file............ HTH
